application
Fans and friends of The North Face will certainly experience a déjà vu when they first come into contact with the Basecamp: The outer material is used in many of the US manufacturer's backpacks and bags. Certainly not without reason - the feel is pleasant, the material is soft and yet robust. In addition, rain or snow are no problem for the fully waterproof fabric. The workmanship is also successful in other respects: the seams are all clean, the zippers and Velcro fasteners appear to be of high quality.
The straps are very tight and difficult to adjust, but once adjusted, the buckles stay firmly in place. The logo prints on the upholstery and bag are subtle – almost too subtle. Overall, the design of The North Face Basecamp is very simple.
Seat
If you put on the Basecamp for the first time and adjust the shoulder strap, the bag seems extremely comfortable: the thick padding on the back provides significantly more comfort than most of the competitors and the shoulder strap does not cut in even with a heavy weight.
But if you then take a seat on the bike with the Basecamp, you quickly become disillusioned: the bag has an additional waist strap to provide additional security and to prevent slipping, but this only works to a limited extent in practice. Due to the rather high design of the bag and the parallel additional strap, the Basecamp always has a lot of leeway - at least if you refrain from tightening the bag uncomfortably. The attachment works quite well for the comfortable way home from the office or from the university, but you shouldn't move too much on the bike, otherwise you'll have to live with putting the bag back in place.
Organization
As sobering as the fit of the bag from The North Face was - when it comes to organization, the Basecamp is hard to beat. But first things first. As always, we pack our bags with:
- A 15″ notebook
- A Tupperware
- A notebook
- Two pens
- A full 1l bottle
Rarely have we had such joy when packing a bag. Whoever is behind the interior design of The North Face Basecamp: Thank you! The bag combines so many solutions that are sorely missed in other bags. Right at the beginning there is the mesh bottle holder inside: Who does not know the problem - full bottle in the bag or in the backpack and with every movement the bottle slips or rolls around inside. That can't happen with the Basecamp: just put the bottle in the bottle holder and it stays bombproof where it should.
Next up is the laptop compartment. The compartment, made of a neoprene-like material, is heavily padded on the back and bottom. Anyone who has already carelessly carried their notebook into a bag standing on the floor will particularly appreciate the padding on the underside. The main compartment also offers a huge organizer for pens, notebooks, business cards and the like. We also find a second, smaller neoprene compartment and a small zipped compartment.
The lid itself also offers a narrow compartment with a coated zipper, which should keep the inside reasonably dry, even in the rain. On the inside of the lid we also find a loop for a U-lock. A small rear light can be attached to the bottom of the bag and the back of the bag also has a compartment with a zip. So if you like to keep things tidy on the go, the Basecamp is the perfect bag for you.
