Bahn News: The second day of the Track World Championships also offered excitement and spectacle. From a German point of view it was again a day with light and shadow. Lucas Liß, who won the gold medal in the scratch, had reason to celebrate.
After his first world title, Liß was a little surprised himself, as he admitted: "I didn't expect to win at all. I dedicate the win to my dad who passed away last month. He was also world champion at 23 and taught me that I have to fight in every race." said the 23-year-old from Unna, who relegated the Spaniard Albert Torres Barcelo and the American Bobby Lea to their places.
Otherwise, there were two of the thankless fourth places for BDR today: Maximilian Levy in the keirin just missed a medal by a hair's breadth when he was caught by his pursuers a few meters before the finish line. Gold went to Francois Pervis of France, silver to Edwars Dawkins of New Zealand and bronze to Azizulhasni Awang of Malaysia. The BDR foursome, who had set a new German record in the intermediate round of 3:57,116 minutes over 4000 meters in the early afternoon, also missed out on the podium. Here, too, the decision was very close and the team from Australia snatched Kersten Thiele and co. the bronze medal in the final meters.
On the other hand, things went better for Miriam Welte. The 28-year-old from Palatinate won the bronze medal in the 500-meter time trial – actually a reason to be happy, but the defending champion felt a little bit of disappointment when she failed to defend her title.
Important decisions are again pending tomorrow, Friday, with the women's individual pursuit and the men's individual time trial. We are curious to see how the boys and girls from BDR will continue.
