Cycling: Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) won the Quebec GP in Canada. With a brilliant sprint he caught Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Shimano) on the line. Third was Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp).
The race on the circuit, which has to be driven eleven times, started quickly and was initially determined by a breakaway group of four led by the former Japanese champion Yukiya Arashiro (Europcar).
However, the field kept the quartet on a short leash. Although the gap was nine minutes after a good quarter of the race, it was gone with a good 60 kilometers to go.
In the final, it was initially an 11-man lead group that broke away on the Cote de la Montagne when Gerrans had to complain about a defect on his bike. The Aussie made the leap back into the peloton, which caught the breakaway before the last pass of the climb.
Lotto Belisol's Jelle Vanendert took this opportunity to break away along with Tejay van Garderen (BMC) and Jan Bakelants (Omega Pharma-QuickStep). However, the trio was not able to break away decisively and was caught by the oncoming pack in the last kilometer.
Here it was Dumoulin who opened the sprint and looked like the sure winner for a long time. Only second breath brought Gerrans to the rear wheel of the Dutchman, who was less than five meters short of victory. After his victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, it was already the second success in a WorldTour race this year for Gerrans.
