Cycling: The third stage of the Vuelta a Espana led over 197 kilometers from Cadiz to Arcos de la Frontera. The uphill sprint was secured by the Australian Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge), who also snatched the red jersey from the overall leader from Alejandro Valverde (Movistar).
After less than ten kilometers, the group of the day had found each other. Five drivers led by South African Jacques Janse van Rensburg (MTN-Qhubeka) then dominated the action at the front. After 50 kilometers of racing, the lead was already eight minutes.
However, it should not stop there. In the field, they now followed up more consistently. Luis Mas (Caja Rural), who took over the mountain jersey with his solo, attacked from the leading group, but was caught as the last escapee with 25 kilometers to go.
Then, 20 kilometers from the finish, Valverde fell and although he was able to continue his journey relatively quickly, he had nothing to do with the final. On the uphill home stretch, the front of the field tore apart. Matthews secured the day's win ahead of Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp). Third was Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha). Paul Martens (Belkin) from Rostock achieved a strong fifth place.
Thanks to the time bonus, Matthews now leads the overall standings ahead of Nairo Quintana and Valverde (both Movistar).
