cycling: Bluegrass Enduro Tour: Mass Start at Glencoe

7 May 2014 by the editorial office

enduro1

Stop two of the Bluegrass Enduro Tour took the field to Glencoe in Scotland. Snow, rain and single-digit temperatures - typically British weather awaited the drivers. But above all the format differs greatly from the other races.

A light drizzle awaited the competitors on Sunday morning at the entrance to the Glencoe Mountain Resort cable car station. At the top of the first chairlift, however, the sky cleared up a bit and the first drivers started the first special stage at the end of a short transfer section in a clearer sky. In the background of the first single track, the spectacular panorama of Buachaille Etive Mòr.

After a brief crossing of the ridge, the riders' fitness was immediately put to the test on a steep climb followed by several technical sections. Due to a flat tire on the very rocky road to the finish, Fergus Lamb had to bury any hope of overall victory right from the start.

The drivers went to the second special stage by cable car and a transfer section. The stage began with a bog, which required excellent fitness to cross to maintain the elevated rhythm. Drivers and equipment were subjected to a tough test on the following rocky descent to the finish. This time Liam Moynihan arrived on the rim and Canyon Factory Enduro Team rider Joe Barnes rode in first place.

The third and final stage was the highlight of the day. The riders took several cable cars, rode a transfer leg and carried the bikes through the snow to get to the start of the mass start á la Megavalanche. There they were lined up in several waves and set off on the instructions of the race director. The longest special stage of the day began with a 500 meter long run on snow. Joe Barnes also dominated this stage. He drove the best time on every stage and secured victory in Glencoe together with his sister Hannh Barnes. Second place for men went to Chris Hutchens, followed by Greg Callachan and Josh Lewis.
