The Swiss Nino Schurter (Scott Swisspower) successfully defended his title at the XC World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Even a fall couldn't affect him. In the battle for second place, Manuel Fumic (Cannondale) surprisingly prevailed against the Spaniard José Hermida (Multivan-Merida).
Reigning Olympic champion Jaroslav Kulhavy (Specialized) started the race cautiously, but still secured fifth place in the end. Julien Absalon (BMC) also showed a strong performance with sixth place, who competed in the race with three broken ribs.
