The Gravel upper class is a broad field. What's going on inside is fascinating, but also raises questions: Why does a bike have to cost five figures? We explain what makes more expensive and very expensive models.
A gravel bike for 4.000 euros? That may seem like a lot to some, but it is only the entry into the upper price range - at the other end of the scale, noble wheels between ten and twelve "mille" await lovers of high-quality off-roaders. So what makes gravel bikes so expensive? And can price differences of several thousand euros be determined by driving behavior, equipment and functionality?
Testing high-end gravel bikes from 4.000 euros: carbon frames and high-quality components
If you spend the said 4.000 euros, you usually get a carbon frame, equipped with a high-quality groupset and aluminum wheelset. Depending on how expensive the frame itself is, the components can be more sophisticated or simpler - for this price, some manufacturers already have an electronic groupset. In terms of function, such a bike will hardly differ from one that is twice as expensive, but it should be noticeably heavier. Because above a certain level, the frame and components differ primarily in terms of weight, which of course means a lot more construction work while the function and durability are the same.
Some bike companies provide their gravel carbon frame with a premium model that is another 10-15% lighter, maybe 150 or 200 grams. Completely integrated routing of cables and lines is here and there reserved for the top model, which is characterized by this also stands out visually. In addition, there are some special features such as suspension, which make the frame even more expensive.
High-end gravel bikes from 4.000 euros in the test: price drivers attachments
When it comes to the components, materials such as carbon or titanium, high-quality bearings, better workmanship and more complex surfaces drive up the price; a complete groupset with gears, brakes, crankset and drive can be twice as expensive as a mid-range set. The same applies to the wheels: Carbon wheel sets are mainly used on expensive bikes, sometimes upgraded with smooth-running ceramic bearings. While the most expensive aluminum wheel sets usually cost around 600 euros, carbon wheels are two to four times as expensive.
Of course, premium gravel bikes also differ from cheaper material when it comes to completion. A carbon seat post is already mandatory for a 4.000-euro bike, and much more expensive bikes are often equipped with handlebars made of carbon fiber material, which saves weight and can offer a certain amount of vibration damping. In the case of upper-class models, a handlebar-stem unit made of carbon is used - such a cockpit can cost well over 500 euros.
High-end gravel bikes from 4.000 euros in the test: 10.000 euros is not the end - but there are also cheaper options
If you add everything up – frame set, component group, wheelset and add-on parts – high four-digit sums quickly add up, and in extreme cases such a build breaks the magic 10.000 euro bar. In these cases, there is sometimes a "premium surcharge" added to the material costs, which is not necessarily understandable. And last but not least, the sales channel plays a major role: direct suppliers who do not deliver their bikes to retailers but send them straight to the end consumer can offer significantly lower prices. In the top segment, this means that a bike with comparable equipment can be several thousand euros cheaper at the same time.
You don't have to order online or pay a five-digit sum to get a super-light, extremely well-equipped gravel bike. In the range between 5.000 and 6.000 euros, many specialist retail brands also offer real dream bikes - and they don't necessarily have to remain a dream.
