E-mountain bike tests - current E-MTBs in check

E-mountain bikes (E-MTBs) are extremely popular, so the selection on the market is enormous. In our tests we try to show the advantages and disadvantages of each model, we look at the price/performance ratio and reveal who will be happy with which e-mountain bike. For this purpose, we not only test in practice, but also on a modern test bench at PTlabs.

What categories of e-mountain bikes are there?

In addition to the usual classifications based on the suspension travel and the area of use - from a comfortable touring bike to an e-enduro for the bike park - the main distinction between e-MTBs is based on the drive system. Nowadays, a fundamental distinction is made between full-power eMTBs and light e-MTBs. The former have well-known motors such as the Bosch CX, Shimano EP8(01) or the Brose Drive S Mag. These all offer around 85 Nm maximum torque and weigh between 2,6 and 3,0 kg. They are often combined with batteries between 600 and 800 Wh. Such e-MTBs usually weigh between 23 and 25 kg. In addition, in recent years there have been more and more light e-MTBs with lighter motors and smaller batteries. Here the total weight of the bike is between 18 and 20 kg. The manufacturers use the Bosch SX, the Fazua Ride 60 or the TQ HPR50s as the drive. These all offer 50 Nm less torque and require more power from the driver.

What do I have to pay attention to when buying an e-MTB?

What is crucial here is that the e-mountain bike must fit the area of use. This applies to the area of application as well as the drive system. In practice, the differences are often considerable and you should not just rely on the technical data such as the spring travel. If in doubt, a test drive always helps, ideally off-road, but a quick test drive at the dealer can also be helpful.

Which manufacturers offer e-MTBs?

Due to their great popularity, virtually all renowned bicycle manufacturers now offer a whole range of different e-mountain bikes. This affects big names like Bulls, Specialized, Giant, KTM, Cube and Corratec as well as comparatively small manufacturers. MTB cult brands such as Santa Cruz, Pivot, Orbea and Rocky Mountain have now discovered the E-MTB for themselves. If you are looking for a particularly good price/performance ratio, you should take a look at the offers from direct sellers such as YT, Canyon, Radon, Propain or Rose. However, you have to do without the service of specialist retailers."
