The different types of cargo bikes

Long John Cargo Bikes: This classic design is characterized by a long loading area between the handlebars and the front wheel. The low center of gravity makes them particularly stable and easy to maneuver. Long Tail Cargo Bikes: Long Tail Cargo Bikes have an extended luggage rack, creating more space for cargo or additional seating. This design is more compact than the Long John and is ideal for everyday use in the city. Long Tail Cargo Bikes are versatile and offer a good balance between transport capacity and maneuverability. Compact cargo bikes: This design combines the advantages of conventional bicycles with the transport capacity of cargo bikes. Compact cargo bikes are smaller and lighter than other cargo bikes, which makes them particularly practical for use in tight urban environments. They are ideal for short journeys and the quick transport of shopping or smaller loads.

Multi-track cargo bikes

Multi-track cargo bikes, such as tricycles and four-wheeled models, offer even more stability and cargo volume. These cargo bikes are particularly suitable for transporting heavy and bulky goods. Their additional stability also makes them an excellent choice for transporting children, as they offer a higher level of safety. However, multi-track cargo bikes are usually larger and less maneuverable than single-track models.

Drive systems: mid- or hub motor?

Mid-engine: The mid-engine is located at the bottom bracket and ensures even weight distribution. These engines provide strong assistance, especially on steep climbs and heavy loads. They are efficient and offer a long range, making them ideal for long rides and everyday use. Hub motor: Hub motors are integrated into either the front or rear wheel. They are generally quieter and less noticeable than mid-mounted motors. Hub motors are particularly suitable for use in the city as they offer direct and uncomplicated support. They are often cheaper but less powerful than mid-mounted motors.
