Battery air pumps for bicycles tested
Inflating a bicycle tire is certainly one of the most frequently carried out repair and maintenance activities. And if we're honest: it's annoying, especially on tour. Battery air pumps promise a solution, as they fill the tire with air in a very short time, as if by magic. The manufacturers don't skimp on promising product descriptions in this regard. The tests in our cordless compressor pumps list of the best reveal whether the electrically operated air pumps with built-in batteries are really the solution to all problems or whether in the end they are just making a lot of air about nothing (or little). Curtain up for the mobile printmakers!
What is important in a cordless compressor pump?
In the test we had a wide variety of designs and designs. Basically, a cordless compressor pump should have the highest possible battery capacity and ensure a good feel. You should also take a look at the maximum pressure: Not all pumps allow tires to be inflated at 8 or even 10 bar. This means that some pumps are out of the question, especially for racing bikes. Preferably, the pump should also have a very compact size and low weight so that it can also be used as part of a tour. For particularly precise inflation, models with a digital display are recommended; a freely definable target value ensures very safe and comfortable work.
Are battery-powered air pumps suitable for mobile use?
The purpose of a battery-powered air pump is that it can be used independently of a socket. Seen this way, all models should be suitable for mobile use. However, there are some important details to consider. To ensure that the pump does not take up valuable space in the backpack, it should be possible to transport it externally. For example, the Michelin pump comes with a special holder for frame mounting. Fischer solves the problem with a bag that is included in the delivery and can be attached to the top tube or handlebars. For multi-day tours, charging options should also be considered. Charging via a USB-C charging socket is very uncomplicated, but models that require special charging plugs are cumbersome.
Cordless compressor pumps: Take individual requirements into account
The cordless compressor pumps in the Velomotion test are just as diverse as the individual requirements. In addition to the models with analog or digital air pressure displays, there are also very compact pumps that come completely without a display. Here, an individual decision must be made as to which requirements must primarily be met. There are also big differences in the LED displays. Size and backlighting vary from product to product and thus have a decisive influence on readability. It should also be borne in mind that the battery-operated air pumps are not suitable for mounting tubeless tires. This requires a high volume flow, which can usually only be provided by a booster pump or a compressor with a pressure vessel.
Best list of battery air pumps: Which compressor pump with battery is the best?
The evaluation of the air pumps in the test is based on various criteria. In addition to easy handling, good readability and an accurate display were important to us. A hose that can be rotated through 360° makes work easier, as does specifying a target value. The possible maximum pressure is important, but can vary greatly from person to person. Normal bicycle, gravel and mountain bike tires can be inflated with all of the pumps tested, but things become more critical in the racing bike sector - but we have noted this for the pumps in question. For better comparability, we always used the same tire to measure the time. The evaluation also included points such as the ability to charge the battery, the heat generated and the ability to transport the pump.
