Perfect for tours and the school commute: The eleven best kids' e-bikes on the market

April 23, 2026 by Lukas Mühlehner

11 recommended kids' e-bikes

First things first: Kids should probably learn to ride a bike on regular bicycles. However, e-bikes for children can still be a good option: The gentle assistance motivates kids to tackle longer rides with their parents, who might also be riding e-bikes. And especially in rural areas, the motor can significantly shorten the journey to school. But what kids' e-bikes are actually available? We've selected eleven suitable models.

What should you look out for when buying kids' e-bikes?

One thing is clear: safety is paramount when it comes to kids' e-bikes. This also means that the motor should deliver its assistance smoothly – high-torque motors have no place on children's bikes. There are two different ways the motor is integrated into the bike. Mid-drive motors like the Bosch Performance Line SX are positioned between the crank arms. This distributes the weight better between the wheels. Hub motors like the Mahle X30 look like a very large hub and are located at the rear wheel. They are usually found on more affordable bikes.

Which wheel size is the right one?

Our collection of the eleven best kids' e-bikes includes models with 24-inch and 26-inch wheels; 20-inch e-bikes are also available. Manufacturers don't entirely agree on the ideal wheel size for a particular age, or more precisely, height. Many brands suggest that a 26-inch bike makes the most sense for children between approximately 150 cm and 165 cm tall. 20-inch bikes are recommended for children up to a maximum height of 135 cm.

What is a reasonable price?

The growth phase makes choosing the right bike anything but easy. Once a bike in the right size is found, it naturally doesn't take long before the child outgrows it. The relatively short lifespan of children's bikes makes the additional cost of an e-bike even harder to justify. The temptation quickly arises to search for inexpensive alternatives on online marketplaces from the Far East. But caution is advised! It's much more sensible to look for used kids' e-bikes with drive systems from reputable manufacturers.
