Review / NG Sports Clovee: A lock-on grip for under €15? The NG Sports Clovee makes it possible and positions itself as one of the most affordable screw-on grips on the market. It surprises with remarkably solid workmanship for this price range and a very low weight. But what's the catch? Our review clarifies what you get for your money and where the compromises lie.
Dimensions and shape
- Weight 100 g
- Diameter: 30,6 mm
- Length: 130 mm
- Price: €14,99
- Colors: Black and many more
One has to give the Clovee credit: its build quality is better than its competitive price would suggest. The two lock-on clamps are made of metal, are slim, and perform their function flawlessly. In this respect, the grip feels more premium than many more expensive competitors. However, it quickly becomes apparent that cost-cutting measures had to be taken elsewhere. With a slim diameter of under 31 mm and a short length of 130 mm, the Clovee is better suited to small to medium-sized hands. Riders with larger hands will quickly find it too small.
The design is maximally pragmatic: The grip is completely round, foregoing any ergonomic features or strategically placed ridges. The grip pattern consists primarily of the repeated NG Sports logo. A single-compound rubber is used, which is on the harder side. As is typical in this price range, the grip end is also made entirely of rubber without any hard plastic reinforcement. A fall onto this area would therefore likely result in material damage.
On the trail: The NG Sports Clovee
On the trail, the NG Sports Clovee performs pleasingly unobtrusively. It does what it's supposed to without making any particular marks. The rubber used provides a solid basic grip both with and without gloves. However, it doesn't break any records. While you feel secure in the saddle in dry conditions, there are grips that offer noticeably more confidence and support, especially in wet conditions. Here, the Clovee doesn't reach the level of more expensive models.
The same applies to comfort. Vibration damping is average at best. The rather hard rubber, combined with the thin diameter, filters out very little of the trail's imperfections. Anyone looking for a grip that protects their hands on long descents will be disappointed. However, for everyday use, commuting to work, or a relaxed weekend ride, the performance is perfectly adequate. It's a classic "fit-and-forget" grip: mount it, ride, and don't give it another thought. A definite plus is the wide range of colors available, which makes it easy to add a splash of color to your cockpit.
