High-end drive system for discerning e-bikers: PEGASUS Estremo EVO 12 Lite

25 November 2025 by Caspar Gebel

PEGASUS Estremo EVO 12 Lite: With the introduction of the Pinion Motor Gearbox Unit (MGU), PEGASUS is setting new standards in the segment of high-quality, low-maintenance e-bikes. For the first time, this innovative motor-gearbox unit combines a fully integrated, electronically controlled, automotive-grade gearbox with a powerful electric motor – thus offering shifting comfort, durability, and riding dynamics at an unprecedented level.

The development of Pinion technology has a remarkable history: Originally conceived for mountain bikes in the late 2000s and presented at Eurobike in 2010, the gearbox was born from the ambition to create a precise, robust, and low-maintenance alternative to derailleur and hub gears. While classic shifting systems initially continued to dominate due to the rise of mid-drive motors, the Pinion gearbox found its niche primarily in particularly durable touring and everyday bicycles. With the presentation of the MGU in 2023, Pinion finally achieved its breakthrough.

Comfortable all-rounder with high-tech drive

The Pinion MGU combines an electronically controlled, optionally automatic gearbox with an 85 Nm motor that delivers up to 800 watts of peak power. Thanks to the optimal coordination of motor and gearbox, gear changes are exceptionally smooth and precise. The system is complemented by an 800 Wh battery and a complete control and display package.

The Pinion MGU combines the engine and gearbox in a very small space.
There are no longer any shifting components on the rear wheel.
The Pinion system includes a long-range battery.

As early as late summer 2023, PEGASUS was among the first brands to use this technology in production bicycles – and has been offering it at an exceptionally attractive price-performance ratio ever since. The Estremo EVO 12 Lite costs €5.499 and uses the twelve-speed version of the MGU; it also features a 900 Wh battery. High-quality components include a 100 mm air suspension fork, Shimano XT brakes, and a particularly bright 100 lux front light.

High-quality components and state-of-the-art drive technology

Another highlight of the Estremo is the virtually maintenance-free belt drive, the high-quality parallelogram suspension seatpost, and the incomparably smooth shifting of the Pinion system. The MGU only requires an oil change every 10.000 kilometers – ideal for frequent riders and commuters who value reliability and minimal maintenance. Thus, with the PEGASUS Estremo EVO 12 Lite, e-bike riders receive a technically and economically compelling overall package that combines state-of-the-art drive technology with excellent everyday usability. "At PEGASUS, we recognized the potential of the Pinion MGU from the very beginning. We are proud to be able to offer e-bikes with this motor-gearbox unit at particularly attractive prices," says PEGASUS Product Manager Giovanni Minacapelli regarding the new technology.

The vehicle's electrical system includes a USB-C port for charging smartphones and other devices.
A particularly bright spotlight is mounted on the air suspension fork.
A high-quality comfort feature is the parallelogram seatpost.

60 years of ZEG: A retail network with tradition and innovative spirit

When eight bicycle retailers joined forces in 1966 to negotiate better terms, no one could have guessed that this would lay the foundation for Europe's largest bicycle retail cooperative. Just one year later, the Zweirad-Einkaufs-Genossenschaft eG (ZEG) had over 100 members – today it has around 900, about half of them located outside of Europe. Since the early 1980s, ZEG has also been active as a manufacturer with numerous innovative bicycle and accessory brands and has since been shaping leasing and financing concepts.

In 2026, ZEG will celebrate its 60th anniversary – with a variety of exciting anniversary and special models available at ZEG specialist retailers: from state-of-the-art e-MTBs to gravel bikes made of aluminum and carbon, as well as e-bikes of all categories and children's and youth bikes.
