Dirtlej Specs 02 review: Large, stable, versatile – the perfect MTB goggles?

4 November 2025 by Michael Faiss

Dirtlej Specs 02

Review: Dirtlej was previously known primarily for its weatherproof clothing. With the Specs 02, they're now venturing into the highly competitive eyewear segment – and directly into the premium range. For just under €200, you get a robust, very wide all-rounder that scores particularly well with its fit and a well-designed nose bridge. However, minor flaws in the workmanship and a coating that is prone to wear slightly mar the otherwise strong impression.

Dirtlej Specs 02
The Dirtlej Specs 02 has a large lens, but overall it's also a large pair of glasses, suitable for wider faces.

Dirtlej Specs 02: Dimensions and build quality

At first glance, it's clear: the Dirtlej Specs 02 isn't a lightweight for those with delicate faces. With a substantial width of 143 mm, it's clearly aimed at bikers with wider heads. But on these, it sits rock-solid and offers a huge field of vision. The frame, made of robust TR90 material, is among the stiffest in the test group. While this makes it less flexible than some other designs, it gives the goggles tremendous stability – you won't have to worry about them on the trails.

The build quality is a mixed bag. Holding the Italian-made glasses, you'll hear a creaking sound when you twist them slightly and notice a minimal amount of play in the lens within the frame. It's not a major issue, but other manufacturers in this price range offer better quality. A real highlight, however, is the adjustable nose bridge: Two defined click positions allow you to perfectly adjust the width to your nose. This lets you optimize the fit and fine-tune the distance between the glasses and your eyes – ingenious!

Top: The rubber coating is generous and ensures a firm grip.
The Specs 02 is manufactured in Italy.

An inconspicuous highlight: The nose bridge can be adjusted in width via defined clicks.

Dirtlej Specs 02: Glass

The centerpiece of the Specs 02 is the large, photochromic lens. It has a neutral gray tint, which we found very pleasant as it doesn't distort colors. The tint range (VLT) of 12,5% to 70% covers categories 1 to 3, making the goggles a true all-rounder. In bright sunlight, it darkens reliably, while in the woods or under cloudy skies, it lightens pleasantly and allows sufficient light through. It's only not bright enough for pure night riding. However, one drawback became apparent during testing: the lens is quite prone to smudges. Especially when sweat is involved, it's difficult to clean it streak-free on the go. A thorough cleaning at home is often necessary.

On the trail: Our test impressions

Everything included: A hard case is part of the delivery.

In practice, the Specs 02 delivers strong performance. The large 56 mm high lens provides excellent coverage and reliably protects your eyes from wind, even at high speeds. Despite its size and relatively enclosed design, fogging was virtually nonexistent thanks to the effective ventilation system. The photochromic lens reacts quickly to changing light conditions, ensuring you always have clear vision on the trail. The wide frame provides an unrestricted peripheral field of vision, significantly enhancing safety. Thanks to the adjustable temple tips and ingenious nose pad, the fit remained secure and comfortable even on rough descents.

The Dirtlej Specs 02 is a successful entry into the eyewear segment. It's the perfect choice for mountain bikers with wider faces who are looking for a robust and extremely versatile companion for all conditions. The outstanding adjustability, especially thanks to the click-in nose bridge, and the strong performance on the trail almost justify the high price of €199. If you can overlook the minor manufacturing flaws and the somewhat dirt-prone lens, you'll get a pair of glasses that will reliably accompany you on countless rides.
