Cycling: The 2025 Vuelta a España has been decided. On the penultimate day of the Tour of Spain, Jonas Vingegaard once again proved that he is the strongest climber in the peloton. The Dane won the mountain finish and is now on the verge of overall victory.
Vingegaard wins in the red jersey
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) will win the 2025 Vuelta a España. The Dane successfully fended off the final attack on his red jersey and will be declared the overall winner tomorrow. On the 164,8-kilometer stage from Robledo de Chavela to the Puerto de Navacerrada mountain pass, João Almeida (UAE – XRG) tried everything to unsettle the favorite – but to no avail. His attack with around three kilometers to go failed to trouble Vingegaard. On the contrary: when Jai Hindley (RB – Bora – hansgrohe) increased the pace, he was already under pressure. Shortly before the Flamme Rouge, Vingegaard launched his own attack – and ultimately dropped all his companions. He thus extends his lead in the general classification and will be crowned Vuelta winner tomorrow.
No chance for the escapees
A total of 33 riders formed the day's breakaway. Mikel Landa (Soudal – Quick-Step) rode solo into the final climb with a slight lead. However, the Spaniard was caught after just a few kilometers by Giulio Ciccone (Lidl – Trek). But the Italian, too, would not have a real chance at the stage win, as the pace in the peloton was far too high. Team UAE – XRG, led by captain Joao Almeida, gradually increased the speed in an attempt to put leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) under pressure.
Vingegaard acaba a lo grande.
