Make way for more comfort: Troy Lee Designs Stage Knee Pads

July 9, 2025 by Michael Wahl

With the Stage knee pad, Troy Lee Designs launches a minimalist, comfort-oriented protector that is aimed primarily at trail and enduro riders who value freedom of movement and ventilation.

Construction

The Stage features the proven D3O protector plate, already used by numerous manufacturers. Unfortunately, the plate is sewn into the protector and cannot be removed for cleaning. The design is classic sock-style. An elastic waistband with silicone prints at the top ensures a secure fit, while the lower section is deliberately left without a waistband to prevent pressure points. The entire back is made of breathable mesh material, allowing for excellent air circulation. The front is made of a slightly reinforced, stretchy material for additional protection. An additional silicone band on the back ensures an even better fit and prevents slipping. The embroidered TLD logo on the front gives the protector a high-quality, sporty look.

Protection

For protection, Troy Lee Designs relies on D3O material, known for its high flexibility and shock-absorbing properties. The protector plate meets CE Level 1 certification, offering solid protection against light to moderate impacts, ideal for touring and technical trails. You can find more information about D3O at the end of this review.

Fitting

In terms of comfort, the Stage impresses across the board. The protector fits comfortably and discreetly, almost like a second skin. The stocking is slightly longer, providing additional support. If that's too much for you, you can easily gather the lower section without compromising the fit.

Movement

This is where the Stage's greatest strength lies, as it offers outstanding freedom of movement. The flexible D3O plate adapts effortlessly to every movement, without resistance or discomfort. Perfect for long days on the bike with plenty of uphill and downhill sections.

breathability

The Stage performs well even in higher temperatures. The generous mesh material on the back and the breathable front ensure a comfortable climate under the protector. Even under intense exercise, the temperature remained comfortable behind the protector plate during our test ride.

robustness

Of course, the thin, flexible material comes with some compromises in terms of durability. The Stage isn't the first choice for serious crashes in the bike park. However, it's well-made, durable for normal trail use, and ideal for riders who value lightness and comfort.

Information about D3O

D3O is an innovative shock-absorbing material characterized by a special property: It is soft and flexible in its normal state, but instantly hardens upon sudden force to absorb and disperse the energy of an impact. It then returns to its original flexible state. This so-called non-Newtonian fluid is primarily used where protection while allowing freedom of movement is required – for example, in sports, motorcycle gear, or even military protective equipment.

D3O was developed in the early 2000s by British designer Richard Palmer. The material was brought to market by his company D3O Lab and first gained widespread recognition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where it was used in the skiwear of British athletes. Since then, D3O has established itself in numerous areas, including protective clothing, helmets, smartphone cases, and work safety products. The special combination of flexibility and protective effect makes the material unique and versatile to this day.
