Cycling: Tadej Pogacar won the seventh stage, securing his second stage victory of the 2025 Tour de France. The Slovenian world champion thus regains the yellow jersey. Mathieu van der Poel was unable to follow on the Mûr-de-Bretagne, where he won in 2021.
Pogacar leaves the competition no chance
The yellow jersey has changed hands again. Tadej pogacar (UAE – XRG) reclaimed the overall lead with his stage win today. After 197 kilometers from Saint-Malo to Mûr-de-Bretagne, the world champion was, as expected, unbeatable in the uphill sprint. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck) could not keep up after the exertions of the past few days. Behind the Slovenian, jonas vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) and Oscar Onlyy (Picnic – PostNL) took second and third place. The Austrian presented a strong Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) in fourth place. Florian Lipowitz (RB – Bora – hansgrohe) and Primois Roglic (RB – Bora – hansgrohe) lost 21 seconds without time bonus.
Geraint Thomas in the breakaway group
Today, too, it took a while until the escape group of the day found itself. Alex Baudin (EF Education – EasyPost), Ivan Garcia Cortina (movistar), Ewen Costiou (Arkea – B&B Hotels), Mark Haller (Tudor) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), a very strong quintet broke away from the main field. However, the two teams Alpecin-Deceuninck and UAE-XRG were reluctant to allow the breakaway riders a large lead. So the gap settled between one and two minutes. After Haller had already fallen back due to cramps, Thomas – the 2018 Tour de France winner – also had to drop out with 17 kilometers to go, as the breakaway riders crossed the Mûr-de-Bretagne for the first time. Numerous enthusiastic fans lined the roadside to celebrate their heroes. The fact that Costiou – a Frenchman from a French team – was the first to arrive at the top made the event perfect for the spectators.
Bad crash for Almeida and other riders
Ewen Costiou (Arkéa – B&B Hotels) was delighted with the mountain points, but was then caught up by the main field. Visma – Lease a Bike, in particular, pushed the pace, so that the peloton became smaller and smaller and even Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck) was briefly in trouble. After an attack by wout van aert (Visma – Lease a Bike) in the downhill, Team UAE – XRG took over again. With 5,7 kilometers to go, several riders crashed at high speed on a descent. Among those caught were Joao almeida (UAE – XRG), William Martin (Groupama – FDJ) and Jack Haig (Bahrain – Victorious). Of course, at this advanced stage of the race, there was no time to wait for the fallen riders. The finale was underway.
