Tour de France #20: Groves wins rainy stage as breakaway rider

July 26, 2025 by Michael Behringer

Grove's Tour de France

Cycling: Kaden Groves won the penultimate stage of the 2025 Tour de France. The Australian broke away from a large breakaway and crossed the finish line in Pontarlier as a soloist. He thus completed the Grand Tour triple, having already won stages at the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España. Surprisingly, there was also a change in the top ten of the overall standings today.

Groves triumphs in Pontarlier

Another victory for a Belgian team: Kaden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck) triumphed in the rain on stage 20 of the Tour de France, beating all his companions. The powerful sprinter didn't even need to rely on his finishing speed – or even attack. When he formed a leading trio with Jake Stewart (Israel – Premier Tech) and Frank van den Broeck (Picnic PostNL) with 16,5 kilometers to go, his two companions disagreed and simply let him go. All three were part of a large breakaway group that also included Tim Wellens (UASE – XRG) and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma – Lease a Bike). Romain Grégoire (Groupama – FDJ) and Ivan Romeo (Movistar), who were also at the front of the race, lost all chances of victory when they crashed on the rain-soaked road in a right-hand corner.

Jegat vs. O'Connor

The day was also successful for Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies). The Frenchman was part of the day's breakaway and thus overtook Ben O'Connor (Jayco AlUla) for tenth place in the overall standings. No breakaway group formed for a long time on the 184,2-kilometer stage from Nantua to Pontarlier, as many teams saw today as their last chance for a stage win. Tomorrow, the 112th Tour de France ends in Paris – but probably not with a sprint finish.
