The new Cervélo Áspero 5: The new level of gravel racing?!

June 17, 2025 by Florian Nowak

Product news: With the new Cervélo Áspero 5, Cervélo is launching a gravel bike specifically designed for the demands of modern gravel racing. The combination of superior aerodynamics, low weight, sophisticated integration, and practical versatility is designed to put the bike at the forefront of a growing racing segment, while also making fast recreational riders even faster.

Cervélo Áspero 5 – Simply faster

Designed for the front end of the race field, the Cervélo Áspero 5 draws on over 30 years of aerodynamic development by Cervélo. The result: According to the manufacturer, the bike is 37 watts faster than its predecessor and 34 watts faster than the nearest competitor. A significant portion of this saving—around 5,7 watts—is achieved solely through the new combination of the HB16 aerobar and stem.

Cervélo Áspero 5 – Weight and frame integration

Despite additional features such as integrated downtube storage, the weight of the frame system has been reduced by 66 grams compared to its predecessor. The new storage compartment offers space for a tube, tools, and a puncture kit – without compromising on aerodynamics. The frame weighs under 1000 grams, and the fork around 400 grams. Additional features such as a T47A threaded bottom bracket, universal derailleur hanger, a new zero-offset seatpost, and fully internal cable routing have been integrated.

But the integration goes even further: A new computer mount, aerodynamic bottle cages, a handlebar compatible with the ITU Aerobar system, and a Smartpak top tube bag are included as standard. The bike also supports the installation of larger chainrings (up to 52 teeth) – ideal for high-speed racing with sprint sections.

Flexible geometry for different applications

The Cervélo Áspero 5 supports both a "matched tire" geometry (e.g., 42 mm front and rear) for stable riding characteristics on challenging terrain and a "mixed tire" geometry (e.g., 40 mm front, 44 mm rear) for improved aerodynamics and more agile handling on fast courses. This geometry, designed to balance stability and maneuverability, is supported by 422,5 mm long chainstays and an 80 mm bottom bracket drop.

Cervélo Áspero 5 – Technical features and variants

The bike is available in several configurations, including Sram Red AXS, Sram Force AXS, and Shimano GRX Di2. All models feature high-quality components such as Cervélo HB16 handlebars, ST31 stems, SP27 seatposts, and Reserve wheels with different rim widths (40 mm front) and 44 mm rear. The tires are Vittoria Corsa Pro Control 700x42c. Prices for the models range from €11.499 to €8.299.

The new Cervélo Áspero5 is clearly focused on racing, with a balance of aerodynamics, weight, integration, and versatility. It's aimed at ambitious gravel racers who value speed and racing performance, but don't want to compromise on functionality and everyday usability. With features like 45 mm tire clearance, integrated frame storage, and comprehensive aero optimization, the Áspero-5 positions itself as a leading contender in the high-performance gravel segment.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
