Ideal protection for hot days: Alpinestars A-Motion Plasma knee pads

June 30, 2025 by Michael Wahl

The A-Motion Plasma from Alpinestars is the lightest and most minimalist knee pad in our current test field. With its sophisticated design, Alpinestars consistently focuses on comfort and breathability.

Construction

The knee pad features a classic sock design with a removable protector plate. A wide elastic waistband with silicone prints on the top ensures a secure fit. At the bottom, however, Alpinestars deliberately omitted an elastic band, opting instead for a non-adjustable additional strap to improve the fit. This solution seems somewhat unusual, but worked satisfactorily in testing. When it comes to ventilation, Alpinestars takes ventilation seriously: The entire front and side panels are made of breathable mesh material that keeps you pleasantly cool, especially during strenuous rides. Why the back isn't also made of mesh remains unclear and seems inconsistent.

Protection

At the heart of the A-Motion Plasma is the company's proprietary Nucleon Plasma protector plate, which is CE Level 1 certified. This is a lightweight, flexible, and breathable material that Alpinestars also uses in motorcycle back and chest protectors. Nucleon Plasma technology boasts excellent shock-absorbing properties and high adaptability. The material is based on an environmentally friendly blend of bio-based components and high-performance polyurethane, a sustainable approach that is still rare in this product category.

Fitting

As soon as you put it on, you'll almost forget you're wearing the A-Motion Plasma. Its low weight and flat design make it ideal for long rides where you want to minimize the feeling that you're wearing protective gear. We didn't experience any pressure points or unpleasant friction during our test.

Movement

Freedom of movement is one of the A-Motion Plasma's greatest strengths. The protector plate is extremely flexible and adapts seamlessly to every movement, whether pedaling, dismounting, or on technical sections.

breathability

This is where the A-Motion Plasma really shines: During an intensive day trip at temperatures over 30°C, we were able to impressively demonstrate its high air circulation and heat resistance in real-life testing. The protector remains comfortable to wear even in extreme temperatures – no heat buildup, no excessive sweating.

robustness

One small downside: Although the front section has been reinforced, it's clear that the A-Motion Plasma isn't a protector for aggressive bike park use or hard crashes. The priority is clearly breathability and comfort, not maximum abrasion resistance. Those who frequently ride on rough terrain should be aware of the limited protection reserves.

The Alpinestars A-Motion Plasma is an ultralight, comfortable knee pad with a clear focus on ventilation and freedom of movement. Ideal for long tours, hot days, and anyone looking for a "forgettable" protector. However, it's less suitable for rough terrain or downhill riding.
