Cycling: Jonathan Milan won the fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Italian was able to prevail in the bunch sprint ahead of Kaden Groves. Previously, Filippo Ganna tried a late attack. In the last 1.000 meters, the multiple time trial world champion was caught.
Milan takes the stage win
The fourth day of the Giro d'Italia was one for the sprinters after all. jonathan milan (Lidl – Trek) has set off from Acqui Terme to Andora after 190 kilometers Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck were able to prevail. A few minutes before the final sprint it didn't necessarily look like a sprint decision. Capo Mele was the expected executioner and could have Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) with his attack almost made it possible to win the day. In the end, Jonathan Milan celebrates. The German came in a strong third place Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious).
Ganna in the breakaway group?
Four riders were able to break away from the peloton after the start: Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché – Wanty), Stefan de Bod (EF Education – EasyPost), Francisco Munoz (Polti Kometa) and Filipo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers). However, the last-mentioned Italian dropped back into the peloton after a few kilometers. The team then explained that the prospect of success was too small and they therefore decided not to be part of the escape group. After the mountain classifications, the Frenchman Calmejane was also caught. The remaining breakaway duo then fought for the award as the most combative driver. However, they had no chance of winning the day. Just like sprinters Fabio Jacobsen (dsm-unternehmenich PostNL). The Dutchman was left behind on the first climb and clearly had trouble keeping up with the pace even on the flat.
Girmay falls twice and gives up
The unlucky person of the day was Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Wanty). The Eritrean, who came third in the stage yesterday and won a stage at the Giro d'Italia two years ago, had to give up the race injured. Within a few kilometers, the hill-resistant sprinter fell twice. After Robert Geink (Visma – LaB), Eddie Dunbar (Jayco – AlUla), Simon Carr (EF Education – EasyPost), Bram worlds (dsm-unternehmenich PostNL) and Torstein Traeen (Bahrain – Victorious), Girmay is the sixth rider to have to withdraw from this year's Tour of Italy.
Ganna attacks at Capo Mele
The approach to the 1,8 kilometer long and 4,4 percent steep Capo Mele was prepared by the teams like a mass sprint. As soon as we reached the foot, I sat down Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) his attack. The world-class time trialist drove over the top of the hill with a lead of around five seconds. But the sprinter teams were not surprised. Ganna was caught again within the last kilometer. And then the stage was clear for the fastest sprinters in the world. This time had jonathan milan (Lidl – Trek) was ahead, also thanks to his strong teammates, who had to work throughout the entire stage and were also heavily involved in catching up with Ganna.
