Desired e-bike in your favorite color: Test Velo De Ville SEB 990 Range

17 April 2024 by Caspar Gebel

Test Velo De Ville SEB 990 Range: The manufacturer from Münsterland offers many customization options with its configurator so that you can put together your own e-bike piece by piece. Whether it's the type of gears, the shape of the handlebars or the color: if you're not satisfied with the standard range from the major suppliers, you can get the components you want here.

Where customers value individuality and specialist retailers enjoy advising – that is where companies like Velo de Ville come into their own. The traditional brand, which goes back to a two-wheeler wholesaler with almost 60 years of history, knows the magic word, and it is called “desired components”: where large manufacturers have to keep a huge range of models in order to offer customers the largest possible choice in different price categories the provider from Münsterland relies on its extensive configurator. Those interested can let off steam to their heart's content, think about different circuit options and look at equipment packages. And since the eye follows along, you can of course also choose the color. While the test bike comes in a subtle “Eucalyptus Green,” Velo de Ville also has more unusual options available: How about French Lavender or Scarlet Red?

Individualization from the handlebar shape to the equipment package

Speaking of test bikes – one thing first, before we get to that one: Of course, the individually configured e-bike does not have to be a bike that is bursting with uniqueness. It's more like it offers what the owner wants in every detail. For example, you can choose between different handlebar shapes or choose a front light with high beam with the optional light package - however, the 150 lux spotlight on the test bike is already very, very bright. And if you like it sporty, you can get your Velo de Ville with the equipment package “Cross” practically as an unequipped MTB.

Velo De Ville SEB 990: Between e-trekking and SUV

The sample bike that the provider from Altenberge provided to us, called the Velo de Ville SEB 990, has everything on it. Located somewhere between trekking and SUV, it rolls on heavily profiled, 60 mm wide 27,5-inch tires; It is pushed by the proven Bosch CX drive. In the current “Smart System” version, the motor is operated with the LED remote on the handlebar grip. The wireless display, which is easy to read due to its size, can be replaced with the more modern Bosch color displays for an additional charge, or you can choose the compact Purion 200 instead of the LED Remote + Display, which combines the keypad and display on the handlebar grip.

With an adjustable stem, the sitting posture becomes upright and comfortable.
The handle on the battery is very practical - it couldn't be easier to remove.

The eleven-speed derailleur gears are typical for e-trekking bikes; An air suspension fork is used at the front, which works much more sensitively than the standard fork with a steel spring. The sitting position is more upright, although you can choose other stems if you want to sit more sportily (or move the adjustable stem down). The solid rear rack is just waiting to accommodate side panniers; There is also a spring flap so that something can be easily clamped onto it.

The premium package includes air suspension forks and B&M spotlights.
A stable rear carrier is also on board.

All of these parts (and even more such as a ring lock) are found on a cleanly crafted frame that appeals with cables laid inside from the stem cover - and with successful details. This includes the motor protection in the same color as the frame, as well as the practical rotating cover for the charging socket. Anyone who wants to remove the 750 watt-hour battery will be pleasantly surprised: the battery can be removed very easily with its textile carrying handle.

Heavily profiled 27,5-inch tires are typical of E-SUVs.
There are even options for frame locks.

Reliable driving behavior

The advantage of an individually configured bike is that (unpleasant) surprises are avoided. When it comes to the driving characteristics of the Velo de Ville, that doesn't exist either: The Bosch CX pushes as hard as usual, and with easy steering and safe straight-line stability at high speeds, the SEB 990 Range is a reliable partner on tours as well as in everyday life.

Compared to similarly equipped standard models from major manufacturers, the individual Velo de Ville is by no means more expensive. But it is completely free of the compromises that you sometimes have to make with off-the-shelf e-bikes. And for that reason alone, it's worth stopping by one of the numerous specialist dealers who stock Velo de Ville and starting with the configuration. Of course, you can also do this at home on your computer.
