Product news / E-Bike: With the Momentum Compact E+, the young brand recently presented an extremely exciting, compact e-bike that scores with well-thought-out features and a very high payload.
The starting signal for Momentum was given in this country a little over a year ago: The brand is at home under the umbrella of the two-wheeler giant Giant, but focuses primarily on urban areas and has so far offered two wheels for the Pakyak E+ and the Voya E+ Everyday. With the Compact E+, a third is now being added, with which the young brand is likely to cause a sensation. On the one hand, it scores with its very compact dimensions - thanks to small 20 inch wheels - on the other hand, with a permissible total weight of up to 180 kg, it offers a payload that exceeds many full-sized cargo bikes.
Giant SyncDrive Sport2 drive with 500 Wh battery
With these key data, the Momentum Compact E+ has a very wide range of uses: from a family vehicle in urban areas to a holiday companion on or in a motorhome to a nimble commuter bike. The compact all-rounder is powered by the Giant SyncDrive Sport 2 mid-engine. This is based on the Yamaha PW-X3, but comes with Giant's own software including sensors, operating concept and battery. With a maximum of 75 Nm torque, it should offer enough power for everyday use. A 500 Wh battery is responsible for the energy supply and is located in the down tube of the modern aluminum frame. Such elegant battery integration is a real rarity in this size class.
One size fits all
Like almost all other market competitors, the Momentum Compact E+ is only available in one frame size. The final adjustment is made by extending the seat post using a quick release and the standard Speedlifter Twist on the front, with which the handlebar height can be adjusted in one move without tools. The bike should be suitable for heights between 1.55m and 1.95m. This approach is particularly advantageous when used as a family companion when different people sit on the bike.
When developing the bike, emphasis was also placed on smaller and larger details in order to make the Compact E+ a pleasant and versatile companion in everyday life; This includes, for example, the M10 mount at the rear for a trailer, which can be loaded with up to 45 kg. The frame design is not just a visual matter either: the crossbar in the frame triangle is positioned in such a way that it offers stability, a deep step-through and at the same time serves as a carrying handle in everyday life so that the bike, which weighs around 26 kg, can be lifted over ledges or stairs . In any case, the handling of the bike is an important point when stowing it away: the pedals can be folded in and the handlebars can be turned 90° to the side using the Speedlifter Twist. The bike's width shrinks to a slim 29 cm and can easily fit in small apartments, in the basement or even in a camper.
High payload and plenty of space
A big advantage of the Momentum Compact E+ is its high payload of over 150 kg. But what to do with the weight? On the one hand, there is the standard rear luggage rack. This is MIK compatible, comes with a stylish integrated rear light and can be loaded with up to 27 kg - so child seats are no problem. At the front, the bike offers two options for mounting a front rack: either on the eyelets on the head tube, or slightly lower on the fork. In both cases, an additional 15 kg of luggage is possible.
Two models from 3.999 euros
The Momentum Compact E+ is initially available in two equipment variants, which differ primarily in the choice of gearshift. On the top model, a continuously variable, automatic Enviolo Automatiq is responsible for selecting the correct ratio. The corresponding cadence can be set directly on the so-called RideControl Dash 2in1 control panel for the drive. The cheaper model, on the other hand, uses a classic Shimano Inter 5e hub gear. In both cases, you can look forward to clean and comparatively low-maintenance operation thanks to a belt drive. Momentum has also given the top model a spring-loaded seat post from Limotec and a folding lock from Abus that locks together with the battery and can be mounted directly on the frame. The two models are priced at 3.999 euros and 4.999 euros.
