Cycling: Primoz Roglic showed it to all his critics. The Slovenian won today's individual time trial of the Tour of the Basque Country comfortably for the German team Bora - hansgrohe and is therefore the first overall leader. Thomas Pidcock couldn't even compete. The Briton from the Ineos Grenadiers team had a serious fall and is in hospital.
Roglic takes 15 seconds off Vingegaard
The Basque Country Tour began with a bang this Easter Monday. Primois Roglic (Bora – hansgrohe) won the opening individual time trial over 10 kilometers with start and finish in Irun. He didn't just show second place on the day Jay Vine (UAE) by 7 seconds, but above all his well-known opponents Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick Step) and jonas vingegaard (Visma – LaB) by 11 and 15 seconds respectively. While the Danish tour winner took it a little easier, the Belgian even risked a little too much. Evenepoel fell in a right-hand bend and lost a few seconds. But Roglic could also have reached the finish line quicker. The Slovenian took a wrong turn shortly before the end - but still won the time trial easily. He celebrates his first victory in the Bora – hansgrohe jersey and starts the second stage as the overall leader.
Pidcock falls badly and is in hospital
The 63rd edition of the Itzulia Basque Country for the British team Ineos Grenadiers couldn't have started worse. leader thomas pidcock fell while inspecting the route. The Briton appears to have injured himself so badly that he had to be transported to the hospital. An exact diagnosis is still pending. The only 24-year-old wanted to ride this year's Tour de France for the first time in a Grand Tour on his own account. His team seems to trust him to become one of the best GC riders in the world in the future.
Tom Pidcock has unfortunately been withdrawn from #Itzulia2024 after crashing during a recon of the TT course.
Following consultation between our team doctor and the race medical team, Tom has been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Updates to follow. pic.twitter.com/CRkz4oLHId
