Amstel Gold Race: Only Pidcock is faster than Hirschi

April 14, 2024 by Michael Behringer

Pidcock Amstel Gold Race Hirschi

Cycling: Mathieu van der Poel is defeated. Thomas Pidcock won the Amstel Gold Race. The Brit was able to win the sprint in a four-man group, just ahead of the Swiss Marc Hirschi. In the women's category, Marianne Vos was victorious for the second time after 2021. In the last few meters she passed Lorena Wiebes, who was already cheering.

Pidcock finally wins the Amstel Gold Race

The 58th edition of the Amstel Gold Race heads to Great Britain. thomas pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) has that “Beer Race” won after 253,6 kilometers from Maastricht to Berg en Terblijt. After coming second and third in the previous two years, the 24-year-old can finally celebrate victory in the Amstel Gold Race. The Swiss was narrowly beaten Marc Hirschi (UAE) in front of the Dutchman Tiesj Benoot (Visma – Lease a Bike). The top favorite is likely to be particularly dissatisfied Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck). The Dutchman no longer had any teammates at his side long before the finish and had to let one dangerous driver go after the other.

Van der Poel isolated early

When the competition realized that the winner of the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix was isolated, they attacked the world champion mercilessly. With 35 kilometers to go, some dangerous professionals were able to break away from the decimated peloton - including the eventual winner. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck) couldn't counteract anything because he couldn't keep up with all the attacks and had no one left to follow up. So he had to rely on the speed of his opponents. However, as more and more drivers were able to break away from the peloton and form new chasing groups, the race to catch up was ultimately hopeless.

Wiebes celebrates, but Vos wins

A real mishap Lorraine Wiebes (SD Worx – Protime) happened in the women’s Amstel Gold Race. The Dutchwoman was already celebrating her victory a few meters before the finish line. But she has the bill without her compatriot Marianne Vos (Visma | Lease a Bike). The 36-year-old pulled ahead with her tiger jump and celebrated her next big victory. She had already been victorious here in 2021. The Norwegian completes the podium Ingvild Gåskjenn (Liv AlUla Jayco). Previously, the race had to be interrupted for an hour and shortened by more than 50 kilometers because a traffic accident occurred outside of the bike race.
