Triban smartphone holder metal in the test: Decathlon's house brand Triban relies entirely on aluminum for its smartphone holder. Does this have an advantage over plastic mounts? Our test reveals it.
At first glance, the Triban smartphone holder makes a very high-quality impression. Everything is neatly processed and the mechanics work like clockwork. In addition to the adapter and holder, the packaging contents reveal various small parts and two hex keys. The included operating instructions explain in a straightforward manner what all the parts are about and how to assemble the holder. Some handicraft work is also required; the holder still needs to be covered with small foam pads. Don't worry if one comes loose, there are two replacement pads included.
First adjust, then mount firmly
For installation, the desired location and the corresponding adapter ring must first be found. Then the whole thing is tightened with the included hex key. In the second step, the holder is then screwed on. Unfortunately, a different wrench size is required for this screw, which is why another hex key is included in the delivery. When everything is securely attached, the smartphone can be clamped using the rotary knob system.
Be careful with handlebars whose diameter tapers towards the grips. If you want to change the angle of inclination after installation, you run the risk of the holder moving towards a taper and therefore no longer having any support.

Very rigid mount
During our testing phase, we were able to collect some positive and negative aspects compared to other mounts. First of all, it should be mentioned that the holder does its basic job very well and holds the smartphone securely in place on any terrain. What we also really liked is that the display is not covered by the holder at any point. The control buttons on the side were also not covered, at least in our test model. Clamping the device using the rotary knob is uncomplicated, although it does take a little more time. However, there is no need to attach a special case or adapter to the smartphone.
On the negative side, it should be mentioned that the mount is very rigid. This may seem good at first glance, but a cushioning property would be desirable, especially on bumpy roads. Another aspect is flexibility. The mount can only be installed on the handlebars. Once installed, it can only be realigned using tools. Turning it from portrait to landscape format can only be done by loosening the screws.
