Combination of magnetic and vacuum force: Fidlock VACUUM system in the test

March 30, 2024 by Michael Wahl

Fidlock VACUUM system in the test: With over 400 patents, Fidlock demonstrates true inventiveness. The Hanoverians have made a name for themselves in the cycling industry with their magnetic bottle holder system. In addition to magnetic force, vacuum force is also used for the smartphone holder. Our test shows how well this works.

The VACUUM system essentially consists of a fastening unit called the base and a special smartphone case or a universal adhesive patch. Fidlock offers a wide range of attachment options for the base, from strollers to selfie sticks. In our test we tested the handlebar base flex mount in combination with the universal adhesive patch.

Just snap it into place

The base flex mount is intended for mounting on handlebars or thin stems up to 40cm in diameter. The assembly is self-explanatory and implemented quickly. To do this, the holder must be attached to the desired location and fixed using the adjusting wheel. A firmly integrated rubber on the underside provides the necessary grip and protects the handlebars from scratches.

We made a mistake when installing the uni phone patch. Since the previously cleaned smartphone case was not yet completely dry, the 3M adhesive dot did not stick properly and slipped. Unfortunately, the correction could not be carried out non-destructively, so in the end the patch could be permanently installed, but the visual result did not look good. Therefore, it would generally be good if the film was already applied to the patch at the factory. At this point it should be mentioned that the phone patch cannot be attached to structured surfaces and cases made of silicone or leather.

“Snap to connect” is the motto when connecting the base and smartphone. All you have to do is place the smartphone on the base; the combination of suction cup element and magnets will snap it into place automatically.

Great handling

In our practical test, the VACUUM system only left positive impressions. Starting with the secure and firm grip on all surfaces, including rough descents, right through to the handling. Because connecting and disconnecting the smartphone is quick and uncomplicated. To separate, all you have to do is press down the release ring so that the suction cup can draw air. We also like the discreet look of the system, which means that the view of the display is not impaired by holding elements that are available in many competitor solutions. By the way, the system can be rotated 360° when connected.
