Raffle: Citec Gravel 8000 wheelset up for grabs

January 8, 2024 by Caspar Gebel

Raffle Citec 8000 GR Gravel DB: The manufacturer from Brandenburg, popular in racing, is coming onto the market with a light, aerodynamically optimized gravel wheelset. Velomotion is giving away a copy that will delight “Gravel Race” fans.

Citec, the wheel manufacturer from Brandenburg, has been an insider tip among triathletes and time trialists for years. The company's wheelsets, with their astonishing depth of production, are known for optimized aerodynamics. The composite rims made of carbon and aluminum are also almost legendary, as they offered reliable braking performance in the era of rim pinchers and were relatively light and aerodynamically favorable.

“Power Block” rear wheel hub with flanges of different heights and 2:1 lacing.
To absorb the braking forces, tangential spokes are used on the left.

Special “Power Block” hubs

The patented “Power Block” lacing is also typical of Citec: the steel rods are screwed in on both sides, including the hub. This eliminates the weak point of conventional cranked spokes, and the special shape of the hubs and rims means that you can work with even, high spoke tension. The result is a stiff, long-lasting wheel - and Citec now also offers this for gravel bikes, with the company's best features.

Citec relies on hookless rims for optimal tire fit.
The deep, wide rims are aerodynamically optimal.

Light and aero for wide tires

The wheelset, which can be considered extremely lightweight at 1.572 grams on the editorial scales, is optimally tailored to wide tires: the hookless rims are 25 mm wide on the inside, which is ideal for tires up to 56 mm wide - this is where Citec sets the limit . The rim profile is also ideal for tubeless installation.

At the same time, the wheelset offers the company's well-known good aerodynamics: The rims are 40 mm deep and up to 32 mm wide; 20 spokes at the front and 21 at the rear, the latter distributed 2:1 on the drive/non-drive side, reduce the potential for braking turbulence caused by the spokes. And of course “Power Block” technology is used, so that the wheels are stiff and stable despite the very low number of spokes. A toothed disc freewheel with large-area power transmission is standard in this price segment, and so the wheelset with its unique hub design presents itself as being of high quality all around. This is a perfect set of wheels, especially for fans of “gravel racing” - and with a bit of luck it will come to your home free of charge and you can test it on the gravel race track in the coming season.
