Hammerhead Karoo 2: The GPS bike computer in the test

20 December 2023 by Florian Nowak

Test: With its innovative features and an advanced user interface, the Hammerhead Karoo 2 is one of the most sought-after bike computers on the market. As the successor to Hammerhead's first bike computer, the Karoo 2 comes with a 40% smaller case and is 33% lighter. Thanks to its quad-core processor with 2 GB of RAM and an Android-based operating system, the GPS computer is reminiscent of a smartphone in many ways and should therefore be easy to use. We took a closer look at Hammerhead's model.

With a powerful processor and extensive connectivity options, the Hammerhead Karoo 2 enables smooth navigation. It supports both GPS and GLONASS, which ensures precise positioning. The robust construction and waterproof housing make it suitable for demanding weather conditions.
The user-friendly interface allows for easy handling, even while driving. The device provides detailed maps, route planning and real-time traffic information. The customization options, from data fields to widgets, allow users to configure the device according to their individual needs. By integrating ANT+ and Bluetooth, external sensors such as heart rate monitors or speed sensors can be seamlessly connected. The Hammerhead Karoo 2 also supports wireless transmission of routes and workouts to enable comprehensive analysis of performance.
Hammerhead Karoo 2
With regular software updates, Hammerhead ensures that the Karoo 2 is always equipped with the latest features and improvements. Overall, the Hammerhead Karoo 2 impressed us with its performance, connectivity and ease of use, making it a promising choice for cycling enthusiasts.
Hammerhead Karoo 2

The navigation functions of the Hammerhead Karoo 2 are particularly noteworthy. The detailed maps and precise route guidance enable cyclists to plan their routes optimally. The display of turn-by-turn directions is clear and timely, making navigation easier even in unfamiliar areas. The system also offers various views, including 2D and 3D maps, to suit individual preferences.

Another plus point that we discovered during our test rides is the battery life of the Karoo 2. With an impressive lifespan of over 10 hours of riding time per charge, it is possible to complete longer bike tours without constant interruptions. This is also likely to be particularly relevant for cyclists who go on long distances or multi-day tours. We found the holder or fastening mechanism of the Hammerhead bike computer on the handlebar mount to be a bit unfortunate. The unconventional system is quite stiff and seems to wear out over time.

The device's connectivity extends beyond pure navigation. Thanks to integration with Strava and other platforms, users can seamlessly share their riding data with their online communities. Wireless synchronization of tours and training data makes managing activities efficient and convenient. An additional feature is the ability to expand memory using Micro SD, which allows you to collect many routes and activities on the device.

Conclusion: Hammerhead Karoo 2
