Holy bimbam with bear handle nut: ION Shelter AMP Hybrid Padded

25 November 2023 by the editorial office

ION Shelter

ION Shelter AMP cycling glove in the test: The goal of the ION brand is to develop smart and innovative products in a unique design. For the cold season, the Austrians have designed a warming and water-repellent glove, the Shelter AMP Hybrid Padded.

Anyone who looks at the facts will be confronted with terms like Bear Grip Lining or Holy Cow. The marketing here was quite creative. In reality, this is an insulating layer made of fluffy fleece, like the one used in cuddly toys. However, this is only present on the upper hand. The suffix “Hybrid Padded” also suggests this; instead, a simple, thin fleece is used in the palm. The outer skin is made of Holy Cow synthetic leather with printed silicone prints and is said to be particularly abrasion-resistant.

The focus is on warm hands

The Shelter AMP is high quality and well made. However, due to the long neoprene shaft, which does not require Velcro, it is not so easy to get into the glove. The glove is also not designed to be flexible due to the cuddly fleece. This makes dressing even more difficult and limits freedom of movement. The seams on the fingers can be clearly felt and do not contribute to the feel-good factor. The fit is also a compromise because the glove fingers are longer. This means you don't hit the seams with your fingertips, but this comes at the expense of a direct grip. Thanks to the stiffened tip, a smartphone can still be used easily.

On the bike you can immediately feel what ION has focused on with the Shelter AMP Hybrid Padded. The insulation ensures pleasantly warm hands right down to the fingertips. This is where the extended cut on the fingers comes into its own. Even icy wind cannot penetrate the gloves. If it gets wet for a short time, the rain rolls off the DWR layer without any problems.

The grip on the handlebars is good for a glove with increased insulation. The brake is also easy to grip. However, if you operate the shift and dropper post lever with your fingertips, you will find the fit annoying.

The high-quality winter gloves from ION for bikers impress with good thermal performance and medium glove thickness. There are compromises in terms of wearing comfort, the lack of reflectors and the high price.
