Cycling: Tadej Pogacar won the Tour of Lombardy. The Slovenian champion triumphed at the last monument of the year for the third time in his career. He is the first non-Italian to achieve this.
Pogacar attacks uphill and downhill
The last monument of the year goes on Tadej pogacar (UAE). On the 238 kilometer long course from Como to Bergamo, the Slovenian was ultimately the fastest man in the field uphill and downhill. After initially going uphill together Alexander Vlasov (Bora – hansgrohe), the favorites came together again over the crest. Finally, Tadej Pogacar made the decisive attack a few kilometers later on the descent. Even on the flat section, the Slovenian champion could no longer be caught. So the only thing left for the chasing group was the sprint for second place, in which the Italian was Andrea Bagioli (Soudal – Quick-Step) in front of the Slovenian Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma).
Gifts in the breakaway group
Immediately after the start, 14 riders were able to break away from the peloton, including the German Simon Geschke (Cofidis) and the Belgian thomas degendt (Lotto – Dstny). Although they were able to gain a lead of over five minutes, in the end they were unable to intervene in the fight for victory. We drove around 80 kilometers from the finish Ben Healy (EF Education – EasyPost) together with Oscar Onlyy (dsm – Firmenich) forward. The breakaway group fell apart, with Irishman Healy eventually joining forces with the Italian Martin Marcellusi (Green Project – Bardiani CSF – Faizanè) as a duo. In the main field, the Jumbo – Visma team controlled the pace almost the entire day.
Pinot ends his career
About 40 kilometers from the finish, the race exploded completely on the climb to Gandia. The runaway duo was caught after Simon yates (Jayco – AlUla) has launched its attack. Of the top favorites could Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) unfollow. The Belgian fell during the race and seemed to suffer from the consequences of the fall. Things got worse Mikel Landa (Bahrain – Victorious), who had already lost contact a few kilometers earlier. Enric Mas Nicolau (Movistar) even had to give up the race. Fortunately, I could Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) reached the finish in his last race. However, the Frenchman was unable to intervene in the battle for the top places in the Falling Leaves Race.
