Vuelta a Espana #13: Jumbo – Visma plays cat and mouse

September 8, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Jumbo Visma Tourmalet Vuelta Vingegaard

Cycling: The Jumbo – Visma team impressively demonstrated at the Vuelta a Espana that they are the measure of all things. Jonas Vingegaard won the 13th stage. In the overall ranking, the black and yellow now occupy the entire podium.

Jumbo – Visma demoralizes the competition

As was almost to be expected, the Jumbo – Visma team delivered the hammer on the 13th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Dutch team put their cards on the table very early in the 134,7 kilometer race from Formigal to Col du Tourmalet. The group of favorites was thinned out until only six men remained up to the Col du Tourmalet - three of them in black and yellow. Then sat down jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) his attack. The two-time winner of the Tour de France immediately opened up a gap and could no longer be caught. Had to get behind it Juan Ayuso (UAE), Enric Mas Nicolau (Movistar) and Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora – hansgrohe) set the pace while Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) and Sepp kuss (Jumbo – Visma) were of course able to hold back for tactical reasons. The American in the red jersey went on the offensive two kilometers before the finish. And since Primoz Roglic finally started sprinting, Jumbo – Visma made the podium perfect.

Evenepoel is already left behind at the Aubisque

Anyone looking forward to the duel between Jumbo – Visma and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) was happy, but was disappointed early on today's stage. Because the Belgian former world champion was not able to follow the group of favorites. As soon as they went up the Col d'Aubisque, the Dutch team's pace was too fast for him. His teammates stayed with him, but the gap grew larger and larger. This means that Remco Evenepoel's mission to defend his title has failed. The Portuguese Joao almeida (UAE) suffered the same fate. But his team didn't wait for him because they were with him Juan Ayuso (UAE) and Marc Soler (UAE) have two more leaders who remained in the favorite group.

Comment: Good for Jumbo – Visma, bad for cycling

Today cycling fans saw cycling history being made live. The Jumbo - Visma team played cat and mouse with the competition in a way that no one has been able to do since the Mapei team was presented at Paris - Roubaix in 1996. Jonas Vingegaard, Sepp Kuss and Primoz Roglic can choose who will win the Vuelta a Espana 2023 at the hotel this evening. You decide who will be at the top of the podium and who will be behind it. Because the competition has no chance. And the Vuelta is currently not the only race in which Jumbo – Visma makes the competitors look like kindergarten children. At the same time, they don't let anything go wrong at the Tour of Britain. They won all of the first five stages. Congratulations go out to the Dutch team, who worked through the whole thing professionally. But that's definitely not good for cycling.
