Kämna does it as usual
He struck again. Runaway King Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe) won the ninth stage of the Vuelta a Espana as a soloist. The German was part of an eight-man escape group, then broke away from his companions up the Alto Caravaca da la Cruz. Already at the foot of the final climb he went on the offensive for the first time. The 26-year-old, who will be 27 in six days, then drove very carefully. The leading group fell apart more and more until Kämna finally competed again around four kilometers and was able to break away as a soloist. With this victory he celebrates the Grand Tour Triple, having previously won stages in the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.
Gone with the wind
Eight breakaways characterized the ninth stage of the Vuelta a Espana. On the 184,5 kilometers from Cartagena to the Collado de la Cruz de Caravaca, the escape group was able to gather around the German Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe) now have a lead of more than nine minutes. For a long time it looked as if the day's victory would surely go to the escapees, until the peloton tore into several parts thanks to a wind relay and the pace in the group of favorites didn't seem to slow down anymore. Among other things, fell lenny martinez (Groupama – FDJ), Wout poels (Bahrain – Victorious) and Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora – hansgrohe) victim of the wind. However, since some teams then refused to participate in the chasing group, the pace slowed and the breakaway's lead increased again to over five minutes. When it finally went into the Alto Caravaca da la Cruz, it was clear: the winner will come from the escape group.
mud in the target area
While the pros got closer and closer to the goal in the dry, the spectators got pictures from the finish area. There was mud on the rain-soaked road. Some track barriers were also blown over by the strong wind. The organizers of the Vuelta a Espana reacted by moving the time measurement for this stage by around two kilometers forward. Of course, that also suited the escape group, as the top favorites had no reason to step on the gas within the last two kilometers. Accordingly, little happened then in terms of overall rating. Joao almeida (UAE) and Alexander Vlasov (Bora – hansgrohe) took advantage of the moment and were able to gain a few seconds.
