Vuelta a Espana #7: Geoffrey Soupe celebrates his biggest win at 35

September 1, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Soup Vuelta

Cycling: Geoffrey Soupe is the winner of the seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Frenchman was the fastest in a chaotic mass sprint and is celebrating the greatest success of his career – and that at the age of 35.

Soupe WINS just ahead of Aular

The seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana ends with an absolute surprise winner. Geoffrey Soupe (TotalEnergies) celebrates his first day's victory in a Grand Tour - and that at the age of 35. The man with the beard went along Orluis Aular (Caja Rural) just behind the Venezuelan champions. The 26-year-old would undoubtedly have been a surprise winner too. Top favorite Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck) didn't get past fifth place today. Get out of the Vuelta a Espana Thymen Arensmann (Ineos Grenadiers). The 23-year-old Dutchman had to give up the race after a fall around four kilometers from the finish.

Herrada & Okamika as a breakaway duo

The 200,8 kilometer seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana took the professionals from Utiel to Oliva. Looking back, it can safely be described as a boring stage. Because with Jose Herrada (Cofidis) and Ander Okamika (Burgos - BH) only two riders formed the breakaway group of the day - although the word "group" is probably too high. Since the pace in the peloton did not remain low, the two were actually caught around 70 kilometers from the finish. But Okamika didn't let up and drove away again shortly before he was caught. But the sprinter teams gave him no chance of success this time either.
