Cycling: Remco Evenepoel has won the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Belgian champion thus also conquered the red jersey of the overall leader. Shortly before the finish, Lennard Kämna was caught as the last escapee.
Evenepoel wins - and crashes
The first mountain finish of the Vuelta a Espana comes on Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step). With an explosive start, the ex-world champion not only secured the stage victory, but also conquered the red jersey. Until shortly before the finish, it looked like a victory for a long time Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe) but the German was caught by the group of favorites shortly before the finish. Second place went jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) before Juan Ayuso (UAE). After crossing the finish line, Remco Evenepoel fell because he collided with a supervisor or a photographer. The Belgian bled quite a bit from his face but didn't let that dampen his good spirits.
Kämna defends herself to the end
The race was initially characterized by eleven escapees, including the Italian Damian Caruso (Bahrain – Victorious) and the German Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe). The two best-placed riders in the overall standings shared the penultimate climb with the Argentinian Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto – Dstny) as the strongest climbers in the escape group. After the latter won the mountain classification, he was distanced in the downhill and finally caught up by the group of favorites. The duo Kämna/Caruso, however, fought against the top riders, who took it easy until just before the finish line. But then opened Juan Ayuso (UAE) the final. Attacks followed Sep kiss (Jumbo – Visma) and Marc Soler (UAE). Ultimately, however, a group of favorites sprinted, in which Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) had the biggest punch.
