Bicycle tire lever test: The Topeak Shuttle Lever 1.2 are two tire levers that have major differences both visually and functionally. This is based on the idea that each lever should take on specific tasks. Our test shows what these are and where the duo reaches its limits.
General information about the manufacturer
The global brand has been offering innovative equipment and tools for all areas of cycling for over 30 years. Topeak provider RTI Sports has a total of eight premium brands under its roof, including its own brands Ergon and Terry. The abbreviation RTI stands for Cycling, Triathlon, Innovation. Since 1998, the Koblenz-based company has specialized exclusively in branded sales of high-quality bicycle accessories.
Topeak Shuttle Lever 1.2 tire levers: First impressions
In contrast to the usual sets, the two Topeak Shuttle Lever 1.2 tire levers have significant differences. The shorter yellow lever has a spoke holder and can therefore be fixed in place. There is also a special notch on the back for deflating a Schrader valve. The rough work of prying off the tire is then carried out with the 150 millimeter long black lever. Both tire levers can be plugged together and stowed neatly in a backpack or saddlebag. However, the set does not fit in a mini saddlebag due to the longer lever. The fiberglass composite material promises high stability.
The bicycle tire levers in the test
Both tire levers are very comfortable to hold. The matt surface and the indentations ensure a non-slip grip. In this context, the respective curvature at the ends of the levers is extremely pleasant. The shovels are polished to allow easier insertion under the tire bead. However, this only works optimally to a limited extent. Due to the rather thick dimensioned shovels, tight fitting tire beads require a greater use of force - this applies in particular to the black lever. The pronounced spoke hook of the yellow lever sits 100% reliably when positioned appropriately, but depending on the rim it can also happen that the spoke hook cannot be set at all due to the shape (see picture).
