Pinion MGU E-Drive System in the first test: The beginning of a new e-bike era?

Published: 20. June 2023

Test / E-Bike: With the Pinion E-Drive System or the Pinion MGU, there is an exciting new name in e-bike drives. As a combination of gear shift and mid-engine, it is currently unique on the market. A classic shifting system is therefore superfluous, whether on a city bike or an E-MTB. We looked closely at the new system […]

Bulls

A completely new model series is starting at Bulls with the Pinion MGU: The Bulls Vuca Evo. The full-suspension version is clearly reminiscent of the well-known E-Stream Evo, but in comparison the main frame is made of carbon and the rear triangle has also been refined. The Vuca Evo X1 and the Vuca Evo FSX are a little less sporty. Both bikes come fully equipped for touring and everyday use.

Bull's Vuca Evo AM

Bike category: E-MTB
Frame material: Carbon main frame / aluminum rear triangle
Suspension travel: 150mm/150mm
wheel size: 29 inch

The new Bulls Vuca Evo AM should be a versatile E-MTB with 150 mm of travel at the front and rear and equipment that is definitely downhill-oriented - for example, the beefy Fox 38 Factory surprises in the top model. The so-called 4-link swingarm rear triangle is exciting, which combines a single-joint swingarm with a multi-joint control of the damper. Both variants come exclusively with Gates carbon belts and of course the now well-known Bulls features such as a powered MonkeyLink interface on the stem for a light, the rear lights integrated into the rear triangle and the 1,8 inch head tube. When it comes to the batteries, you have the choice between 720 Wh or the large 960 Wh model – by the way, for a fair 200 euro surcharge.

Price: € 8.499

Bull's Vuca Evo FSX

Bike category: SUV electric bike
Frame material: Aluminium
Suspension travel: 120mm / 120mm
wheel size: 29 inch

With the Vuca Evo FSX, Bulls also has a full-suspension touring and everyday bike with Pinion drive in its portfolio. The frame here is made of aluminum and, like the suspension fork, comes with 120 mm of travel, which should be more than enough given the area of use. The equipment is functional, but should also be sufficient for not too rough excursions into the terrain. Thanks to a permissible total weight of 150 kg and trailer approval, nothing stands in the way of everyday use. The Bulls Vuca Evo FSX 1 is also available as an S-Pedelec.

Bull's Vuca Evo X

The hardtail counterpart to the Vuca Evo FSX also comes with 120 mm of travel at the front and otherwise identical equipment. The aluminum frame has a similar shape and is alternatively also available as a step-through model. There is also a variant of the Vuca Evo X up to 45 km/h.

Bike category: SUV electric bike

red deer

Two models with Pinion MGU come from Rotwild. In addition to the sporty R.X1000, which is a continuation of the well-known R.750, there will also be a more touring-oriented model called the R.C1000. This is equipped with a high-quality lighting system and mudguards directly from the factory. Both models rely on a carbon frame and are only available with the large 960 Wh. Interesting: Rotwild is the only manufacturer that only uses a chain and does not use a carbon belt.

Deer R.X1000

The R.X1000 is the logical continuation of the well-known R.750 platform and is at home in the All Mountain / Big Mountain segment. With 150 mm of travel and progressive geometry, it should also feel at home on demanding terrain.

Bike category: E-MTB
Frame material: Carbon
Suspension travel: 150mm/152mm
wheel size: 29 inch

Deer R.X1000 Pro

Drive: Pinion E1.12
Battery pack: 960 Wh

Battery pack: 960 Wh
Fork: Fox 36 Factory 150
Mute: Fox Float
brakes: Magura MT5 HC 203/203mm

Price: € 11.999

Deer R.C1000

The R.C1000 is more moderate than the R.X1000, although despite the Supernova lighting system and mudguards, it should also be able to handle off-road excursions very well. In addition to 140 mm of travel, this is also supported by sporty geometry data.

Bike category: SUV electric bike
Frame material: Carbon
Suspension travel: 140mm/142mm
wheel size: 29 inch

Deer R.C1000 Tour

Drive: Pinion E1.12
Battery pack: 960 Wh

Simplon

At Simplon you start with two very different Pinion e-bikes. On the one hand, the Rapcon Pmax Pinion, an extremely sporty E-MTB with a carbon frame, which will be available both as a universal AM variant with 150 mm and as a genuine enduro with 170 mm of travel. On the other side is the Kagu Pinion, a classy city or trekking bike with a carbon frame.

Simplon Rapcon Pmax Pinion

With Pinion, the successful E-MTB platform Rapcon Pmax from Simplon now has its third drive system and complements the portfolio with the previous Bosch CX and TQ HPR50. The basic values remain unchanged: the carbon frame is available as an AM variant with 150 mm as well as an enduro with 170 mm at the front and 165 mm at the rear. When it comes to the wheel size, you have the choice between 29 inches or a mullet mix with a small wheel at the back. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to battery sizes: 720 or 960 Wh internally, optionally even with a range extender, which then increases the total capacity to almost 1.500 Wh. As always with Simplon, the equipment can be configured according to your own wishes, the starting price is 8.999 euros.

Bike category: E-MTB
Frame material: Carbon
Battery sizes: 720 or 960 Wh, option for range extender
Suspension travel: 150mm / 150mm | 170mm / 165mm
wheel size: 29 inch / mullet

Price: from € 8.999

Simplon Kagu Pinion

If you are looking for a classy bike for the city or your next bike trip, you may have stumbled across the Simplon Kagu in the past. From model year 2024 it will also be available with a Pinion drive, of course still with a light carbon frame, also with a low step-through. Nice: The high permissible total weight of 160 kg.

Bike category: City / trekking
Frame material: Carbon
Frame shape: Diamond / step-through

Price: TBA

Pegasus Estremo Evo

At Pegasus, the models with Pinion drive are called Estremo Evo. One can confidently speak of the sister model of the very successful Premio Evo, and the area of application is similar: the bike is primarily at home on firm ground, in the city and in everyday life. The bike will be available in two variants, the top model Estremo Evo 12 Lite and the more affordable Estremo Evo 9 Lite. The latter is one of the few Pinion e-bikes to use the 9-speed drive and does without a carbon belt in favor of a lower price. Both come exclusively with a specially developed 700 Wh battery in the down tube and in three frame shapes: diamond, trapezoidal and step-through.

Zemo ZE P FS 12

Zemo is also one of the first manufacturers to introduce e-bikes with the Pinion system. In keeping with the rest of the portfolio of the manufacturer from Cologne, the ZE P FS 12 is a full-suspension touring and city bike that should also be able to cope with excursions on easy gravel paths. The so-called Interlink chassis offers 100 mm of spring travel, which can also show off its strengths when fully loaded thanks to the decoupled rear luggage rack. Speaking of loading: the bike has a maximum permissible total weight of 150 kg – great! The ZE P FS 12 is also available as an S-Pedelec with the Speed suffix.

Flyer Goroc TR:X

At Flyer, the Goroc TR:X expands the popular Goroc model series with another drive system. However, the orientation as a sporty touring bike is retained - accordingly, there is a geometry that is definitely suitable for off-road use with 130 mm of spring travel at the front and rear, but also everyday equipment that should make everyday life easier. If you want to do without mudguards and the like, you will also find a genuine touring MTB in the range with the XC model. The 700 Wh battery can be easily removed from the side of the carbon main frame and, if desired, expanded by a further 535 Wh capacity with the range extender. Not surprisingly for the Swiss manufacturer, the Goroc TR:X is also available as an S-Pedelec.

i: SY

The i:SY will also start next season with two e-bikes with Pinion drives. On the one hand, of course, the absolute classic: compact bike with 20 inch wheels and the proven frame concept, which has enjoyed great popularity for many years. The Pinion MGU is combined with a long-range 800 Wh battery on the seat tube. Long ranges shouldn't be a problem. The i:SY P12 ZR will also be available as an XXL version with higher weight allowance and a larger frame. There is also an S-Pedelec with the suffix 'Speed'.

In addition, i:SY also donated the new Pinion MGU to the compact cargo platform in one variant. The i:SY Cargo P12 ZR will be available in two lengths and also comes with the large 800 Wh battery.

Kettler

A total of five models with the Pinion MGU are being launched by Kettler for the coming season. They all go by the name of Pinniato and are geared a little differently: the full-suspension FS version is a full-fledged SUV e-bike that shouldn’t cut a bad figure off-road either. The hardtail also has light MTB genes, but is probably more intended for everyday use, for commuting or for a relaxed tour to the beer garden. The Pinniato HT Comfort is also aimed at more price-conscious buyers. If you want even more, you can even add the 535 Wh range extender. Incidentally, both the fully and the hardtail are available as S-Pedelecs.

All Terrain

Tout Terrain was one of the first supporters of Pinion when the Swabians brought their first gearboxes (without motor) onto the market more than ten years ago. The travel and adventure bike specialists are also among the launch partners for Pinion's first e-drive - with two models. The Pamir is a bike as you would expect from Tout Terrain: designed for durability, for long distances and adventures in the saddle. In contrast, the Appia is a versatile trekking bike that is certainly ideal for everyday use or for commuting.

All Terrain Pamir

Bike category: Adventure
Frame material: Aluminium
wheel size: 29 inch

Named after the high mountains in Central Asia, the Tout Terrain Pamir lives up to its name; Designed as a robust and maintenance-free touring bike, it does not have a suspension fork, for example. In combination with the also maintenance-free Pinion drive, you get an e-bike that only needs to be changed from time to time to change the brake pads or tires. Ideal for tours away from civilisation.

Tout Terrain Pamir One

Drive: Pinion MGU E1.12
Battery pack: 700 Wh
Brake: Magura MT5
