Giro d'Italia #7: Davide Bais sensationally wins on the Gran Sasso d'Italia

12 May 2023 by Michael Behringer

Davide Bais Giro

Cycling: Davide Bais has won the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Italian was part of a four-man breakaway, a trio of which stayed together for the final meters. The classification drivers apparently agreed on a truce.

Davide Bais wins for Eolo – Kometa

Again, the outliers have the edge. On the seventh stage of Tour of Italy triumphed Davide Bais (Eolo – Kometa). The Italian was able to hold his own against his companions in the final meters of the 218-kilometer stage Karel Vaček (Corratec – Selle Italia) from the Czech Republic and Simone Petilli (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) from Italy prevail. Also the Eritreans Henok Mulubrhan (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) was initially part of the breakaway group, but had to be torn away well before the start of the final climb. In the main field, the drivers disappointed their fans a bit. There was no open exchange of blows between the favorites. Everyone crossed the finish line together. Also Andreas Leknessund (DSM) was among them. The Norwegian keeps his pink jersey. Thanks to his stage win, Davide Bais is the new wearer of the blue jersey.

Positive corona test at Aleotti & Conci

The 218-kilometer section from Capua to Campo Imperatore on the Gran Sasso d'Italia began with bad weather. The riders had to tackle the stage in the rain, but as the race progressed the skies cleared and the sun warmed the pros. Unfortunately, the Italians could not be there Giovanni Aleotti (Bora – hansgrohe) and Nicola Conci (Alpecin – Deceuninck) because they tested positive for Corona. Accordingly, there were still 169 riders at the start of the seventh stage, which was made for a large escape group. However, the expected fireworks at kilometer zero did not materialize. Only four riders formed the breakaway group. The Czech Karel Vaček (Corratec – Selle Italia), the Eritreans Henok Mulubrhan (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè), as well as David Bais (Eolo – comet) and Simone Petilli (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) from Italy got a lead of more than eleven minutes.

DSM works for Leknessund

Even before the second sprint classification Henok Mulubrhan (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) no longer follow the pace of his companions. He fell back into the peloton, which continued to be dominated by Dutch captain-leader DSM Andreas Leknessund was cited. No other team seemed to want to support DSM. With 20 kilometers to go, the trio still had a lead of more than seven minutes. And the peloton was another 13 kilometers later - when the steep part of the last mountain began - still about 50 men big. As expected, the hoped-for early exchange of blows between the classification drivers did not take place. But the spectators got to see mountains of snow on the side of the road.

Boredom in the favorites group

3,5 kilometers from the finish seemed Karel Vaček (Corratec – Selle Italia) at the end. The 22-year-old Czech had long since reached his limit. But with great commitment, a lot of struggle and the hope of great success, he was able to fight his way back. He then even attacked and tore a gap between his two Italian opponents. In the last kilometer the trio was together again. At the same time, something finally happened in the group of favorites. Thomas Champion (Cofidis) launched an attack. The mere fact that the Frenchman was still in the group of favorites at the time makes it clear that the pace was not set too high. After that nothing happened there. All favorites crossed the finish line at the same time. But the hero of the day is Davide Bais. With his day's victory, he also takes over the mountain jersey.
