Matthew's Giro d'Italia

Cycling: Michael Matthews has won the third stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Australian was faster than Mads Pedersen in the uphill sprint. Leader Remco Evenepoel remains in the pink jersey. The Belgian was even able to extend his lead in the overall standings.

Matthews celebrates his third Giro stage win

After 2014 and 2015 wins Michael Matthews (Jayco – AlUla) for the third time in his career a stage at Giro d'Italia. The Australian was faster than the Dane in the demanding uphill sprint Mads pedersen (Trek – Segafredo). Together, the two teams made for a challenging final quarter of this stage. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) remains in the pink jersey. The Belgian was even able to extend his lead over his opponents because he had the bonus sprint in Rapolla Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) won. The new wearer of the mountain jersey is Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ). The Frenchman crossed today's third category climb first.

Only Corratec – Selle Italia dares

On the 213-kilometre route from Vasto to Melfi, two demanding hills, the Valico dei Laghi di Monticchio and the Valico La Croce, had to be mastered shortly before the finish. The situation was clear to all teams: The Trek – Segafredo and Jayco AlUla teams are trying their captains Mads pedersen or Michael Matthews to pilot to the finish line. To get rid of the fast sprinters, the pace had to be increased on the climbs. Hardly any drivers dared to join the breakaway group today. Only Veljko Stojnic and Alexander Konychev from Team Corratec – Selle Italia dared an early attack. With a lead of around three minutes at times, they never really had a realistic chance of winning the day.
