Giro d'Italia #13: One Rubio is the laughing third party

19 May 2023 by Michael Behringer

A Rubio Giro

Cycling: One Rubio is the laughing third. The Colombian won stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia ahead of Thibaut Pinot and Jefferson Cepeda. The two beaten had fought several times before. Rubio seemed to be the weakest, but then simply let the two brawlers stand in the sprint to the finish.

A Rubio Giro d'Italia

A Rubio wins the shortened stage

The shortened 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia starts One Rubio (Movistar). After almost 75 kilometers, the Colombian is planning an uphill sprint Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) and Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education – EasyPost) enforced. The trio were part of a breakaway group that broke away from the peloton up the Croix de Coeur. Surprisingly little happened in the peloton. Only a few attacks ultimately caused no large time gaps. Only Hugh Carthy (EF Education – EasyPost) was able to squeeze out a few seconds.

No Saint Bernhard, no Mads Pedersen

Due to constant rain and cold, today's 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia had to be reduced from the planned 199 kilometers to just 75 kilometers. The Gran San Bernardo was completely dropped from the program. The pros didn't start the race until 15 p.m. - and then they went straight into the Croix de Coeur. Unfortunately wasn't there anymore Mads pedersen (Trek – Segafredo). The Dane was no longer at the start today due to illness.

Pinot gets the blue jersey

As expected, the shortened stage got straight to the point. Hugh Carthy (EF Education – EasyPost) and two teammates made a big attack. But the Ineos Grenadiers team around leader Geraint Thomas knew how to stop this attack immediately. Due to the high pace at the beginning, the group of favorites was immediately thinned out. Known Victims: Jay Vine (UAE) and Jack Haig (Bahrain-Victorious). At the same time, the escape group of the day formed. Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education – EasyPost), Valentin Paret Peintre (AG2R – Citroën), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ), Derek Gee (Israel – Premier Tech) and One Rubio (Movistar) had a lead of almost two minutes at the top of the Croix de Coeur. Pinot secured the mountain classification and even pulled away from his companions on the subsequent descent. The formerly bad downhill skier has improved a lot in this area, but then waited for his colleagues in the flat section.

One Rubio is the laughing third party

The leading group was more and more at odds. In the final climb sat Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) several attacks. But Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education – EasyPost) and One Rubio (Movistar) kept coming back. There were several arguments between Cepeda from Ecuador and Pinot from France. These two will no longer be friends. Rubio hoped that this would make him the laughing third party. And that's exactly how it should be. In the sprint for the day's victory, he left Cepeda and Pinot behind and won the stage. Nothing happened in the favorite group for a long time. Lorenzo Fortunato (Eolo – comet) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education – EasyPost) tried to break away with an attack. later left Damian Caruso (Bahrain – Victorious) on the offensive. But Team Ineos Grenadiers controlled the pace and didn't let anyone really far away. So only Carthy could gain a few seconds. Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe) came along Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) to the finish.
