The multi-tool among tire levers: ROSE 5-in-1 tire levers on test

28 May 2023 by Andrew Waldera

ROSE 5-in-1 tire levers on test

Bicycle tire lever test: Equipped with five functions, the ROSE 5-in-1 tire lever presents itself as a true all-rounder at first glance. A special gimmick is certainly the integrated chain lifter to hang up a chain that has jumped off. But can the tire lever also convince in its originally intended area of application?

General information about the manufacturer

For more than 110 years, the name Rose has stood for cycling and the passion for bicycles. A small bicycle shop in Bocholt, which was founded in 1907 by Heinrich Rose, marked the beginning. The company, which is still firmly in family hands today, started out as a mail order business in the 1980s and launched its own brand ROSE Bikes in 2011. In addition to the ROSE Biketown in Bocholt, ROSE Bikes is now represented in a total of 15 cities with stores and workshops.

ROSE 5-in-1 tire levers: first impression

The tire lever made of polyamide is a real cornucopia of functionality. In addition to the chain lifter for placing a broken chain, the all-rounder offers an SV valve key and a pressure release pin. The other two functions relate to removing and installing the tire. In contrast to many other tire levers, the tip is quite narrow at 14 millimeters. A spoke fixation on both sides is just as important as a snap-together function for the practical connection of the levers.

The bicycle tire levers in the test

With the 5-in-1 tire lever, ROSE promises that the tire can be put on and taken off in a way that is gentle on the rim, which is of course a very important point, especially with carbon wheels. We can actually confirm this statement without qualification. However, this is not due to a sophisticated design, but to the soft material, which literally takes a crooked approach to high exertion (see picture below right). With stubborn tires, the tire levers are completely overwhelmed. The additional functions cannot compensate for that.

The ROSE 5-in-1 tire lever can do a lot, but the product is surprisingly weak, especially when mounting and removing tires. Actually, this should be the core competence of a tire lever. It's a shame, because we had promised ourselves more!
