Personomic bike grips: Made to measure with 3D printing

17 April 2023 by Florian Nowak

Product news: As early as 2016, three founders from Stuttgart had the idea of manufacturing custom-made and ergonomic products for cyclists, among other things. After an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign, the first customers held their customized Personomic bicycle grips in their hands in 2022. The handles are 100% made in Germany using the latest 3D printing systems.

Hand complaints such as numb fingers, numb hands or damaged nerves usually occur for three reasons. Excessive pressure, vibration and hyperextension of the wrist. According to studies, ergonomic standard handles are an emergency solution for hand complaints because they do not fit the hand one hundred percent. The custom-made Personomic bicycle grips offer a similar function as orthopedic shoe inserts. The hands are relieved with an individual negative shape with recessed grips and palm rests. The soft material also provides additional comfort.

In order to adapt the Personomic bicycle grips perfectly to the desired hand shape, individual forms are printed for each pair of grips using a state-of-the-art 3D printer, which are then cast with silicone as the grip material. The basis for the forms is a millimeter-precise measurement of the hands.

Here one often thinks of complicated measurement processes, in reality all one needs is a photo of the top of the hand on a DIN-A4 sheet of paper as a reference object. The photo is analyzed and Personomic creates a freely movable 3D model that uses software to transfer the ideal grip position to a blank grip and serves as the starting point for the 3D-printed mold. Once the silicone has hardened after pouring, the molds are removed, a clamp ring fitted and the grips are ready for use.

Personomic handles cover four properties for more comfort: ergonomics, cushioning, grip and durability. Of course, the main reason is the individual adjustment to your own hand, but the material also plays a major role when it comes to comfort. Personomic relies on silicone, which offers excellent grip even in wind and weather and thus ensures optimal cushioning thanks to its soft properties. The textures offered have been developed to minimize abrasion. UV radiation and sweat do not have a negative impact on the handles, they neither stick nor dissolve with regular use.
