Testing the Leeze CH 40 Allroad Basic: Whoever mounts the carbon wheel set on the gravel bike does not have to make any compromises – the Leeze wheels are also just as stable as they are inexpensive.
Leeze from Münsterland offers a carbon wheel set for gravel bikes for just under 900 euros, the data of which arouse curiosity. The fact that the wheels are called "Basic" is mainly due to the hubs, which are equipped with classic cranked spokes - no disadvantage in terms of stability, as the test results of the CC 50 Disc Basic aero wheel set in "Tour" magazine prove.
Wide hookless rim with a large internal width
The all-road wheel set first catches the eye with its 40 mm deep, full 33 mm wide aero rims, then with its fairly low weight of 1.630 grams. This makes the Leeze bikes perfectly suitable for long-distance gravel races. The rims are internally 25mm wide and hookless, giving wide tires optimal lateral support. Leeze approves the rims for tires from 28 mm width; Tires from 30 mm are ideal. In any case, the wheels can also be ridden on a racing bike. It is important that the tires are approved by the respective manufacturer for hookless rims, and the maximum possible air pressure must also be observed. Installing the tubeless tires is child's play and the tires remain permanently sealed; when inserting the valves into the off-centre hole (which is bordered by a small collar), you notice that the rims are asymmetrical, which improves stability with balanced spoke tension.
Even a tire that is almost 40 mm wide hardly protrudes laterally over the rim, which in turn speaks for good aerodynamics. In practice, the Leeze bikes are characterized by a lot of stability and a noticeable vibration damping; Bearings and freewheel with four pawls and fine 48-point internal teeth run with little friction. If you want, you can even order ceramic bearings from Leeze for an additional charge. As is common today, the freewheel body can simply be pulled off, which is very practical if you use the wheelset on bikes with different shifting systems (e.g. 11-speed/12-speed), which require different cassettes and thus freewheel bodies. In addition to the standard Shimano freehub, Leeze also has the SRAM XDR and both Campagnolo variants (12-f./13-f. N3W) in its range. In continuous use, the consistently good concentricity of the wheels, which are built with very low tolerances, is noticeable - and so the Leeze CH 40 Allroad Basic can be attested to show very good performance in all relevant areas.
