DT Swiss G 1800 splines: Inexpensive Gravel wheelset with no weaknesses

March 30, 2023 by Caspar Gebel

DT Swiss G 1800 Spline

DT Swiss G 1800 Spline: The DT Swiss is solid and durable and, with its wide rims, perfectly matched to gravel bikes. Its slightly higher weight does not prove to be a disadvantage in practice either.

With the G 1800, DT Swiss has achieved a real blockbuster. The gravel-specific wheel set is often specified by wheel manufacturers who want to build their bikes with branded goods, and is ideal for the end user as a robust second wheel set as well as for "upgrading" a gravel bike with very simple wheels that, for example, cannot be ridden tubeless . For just under 400 euros, the Swiss actually provide everything that off-road racers need: the 25 mm deep rims with an internal width of 24 mm are optimally adapted to wide tyres. The hub shells, which are designed for straight pull spokes, look the same as those of the more expensive DT wheels, and experience has shown that the bearings are very durable, and the three-pawl freewheel is also okay: the proven technology has no real disadvantages compared to a toothed disc freewheel. This freewheel can also be removed by hand; a freewheel body for SRAM twelve-speed cassettes is included. As usual, DT Swiss delivers the wheel set with glued-in tubeless rim tape, and the assembly of the tubeless tires works as well as you would expect from the Swiss manufacturer.

DT Swiss G 1800 Spline - Large internal width for wide tires

Off-road, the G 1800 behaves inconspicuously in the best sense of the word: the wide rims give gravel tires optimal lateral support; the perceived high rigidity ensures loss-free power transmission and high steering precision. At a good 1.900 grams, the wheels are of course quite heavy, but they still allow a sporty pace - you shouldn't overestimate the weight issue anyway. What counts more on a gravel bike is solidity and reliability, and in this respect the G1800 have long since proven themselves in Velomotion continuous use. It should also be positively emphasized that DT Swiss uses aerodynamically favorable bladed spokes even on the cheapest Gravel wheel set, which is not a matter of course in this price range.

Detailed pressure specifications are embossed into the rims.
The tangential spokes optimally absorb the braking forces.

With its wide tubeless rims, the solid DT Swiss G 1800 offers everything a gravel wheelset needs to be able to do. It is therefore just as suitable as an upgrade as as a second wheel set if noble carbon material is to be protected.
