Aerocs GCX Terra: Lightweight carbon wheelset with solid technology

March 16, 2023 by Caspar Gebel

Aerycs GCX Terra

Whether all-road, gravel or cyclocross: the Aerycs GCX Terra scores with solid quality at a very low weight, and there are three variants with different rims.

The manufacturer from northern Germany offers its GXC Terra in three versions: with 30, 40 or 50 mm deep rims. The inner width (22 mm) and overall width (29 mm) of the carbon rims are identical in each case, which means they have a contemporary aero profile and can be ridden with 28 mm narrow racing tires as well as with 62 mm gravel rollers. The wheel set is expressly approved for use on gravel bikes and cyclocross bikes. The 40 mm variant is an ideal all-rounder - presumably aerodynamic enough for use on road bikes, and also properly pressure-resistant at 6 bar, which is important if you still ride with a tube.

At 1.640 grams including tubeless rim tape, the wheelset can definitely be called light. The rim is designed for slightly higher damping with reduced vertical stiffness, and the sidewalls and rim flanges are particularly stable to prevent defects in the event of a puncture - the wheel set is therefore very well suited for use on gravel bikes and cyclocrossers.

Easy tubeless assembly

Tubeless tire mounting is also easy with this wheel set, with the included (and rather expensive) MilKit tubeless kit including special valves doing a good job. Aerycs uses the tried-and-tested 350 hubs from DT Swiss with straight pull spokes (DT Swiss Aero Comp) and toothed disc freewheel – all-round solid technology that is good for thousands of kilometers. Aerycs speaks of a ten percent reduction in radial stiffness in order to improve comfort, although the effect is difficult to assess given the 40 mm wide tires. In any case, the wheels are always stiff enough for heavier riders, whereby you benefit from the low weight in acceleration and handling. Aerycs also offers the wheel set with black decor, and it can also be equipped with SRAM XDR and Campagnolo freewheels (9-12f. or 13f.). With the 30 mm deep rims, the wheel set is said to be around 80 grams lighter, with the 50 mm rims 60 grams heavier - so the test sample hits the golden mean here too.

The high-strength rim tape seals well.
At 29 mm, the Aerycs rim is nice and wide.
