Cycling: Tiesj Benoot won the one-day race Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne. The Belgian won from a small but well-manned breakaway ahead of his team-mate Nathan van Hooydonck.
Benoot and van Hooydonck fool the competition
The 75th edition of Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne is coming up Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo - Visma). After 193,1 kilometers in an exciting race, the Belgian came in ahead of his compatriot and teammate Nathan van Hooydonck (Jumbo – Visma) snatched the win. Five drivers were supposed to fight for victory in the start and finish town of Kuurne, after they had previously been able to break away from the peloton together. The Dutch team was represented in twos at the front and skilfully exploited this superiority over the last kilometers. The podium completes Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious).
Too little help for the sprinters
The Mont Saint-Laurent decided the semi-classic Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne about 80 kilometers from the finish. Tim Wellens (UAE) caused a group of five to form with his attack, which kept the peloton at bay until the end. With Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty), as well as Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo – Visma) and Nathan van Hooydonck (Jumbo – Visma) such strong companions gathered at his side that the lead quickly increased to over a minute and could be maintained. In the main draw, the team from Arnaud de Lie (Lotto – Dstny) but received support from other teams too late.
