106-piece MTB tool box with 3 drawers and hinged lid: Extensive bike tools from Weber Werke tested

21. February 2023 by Andrew Waldera

Bicycle tool test: Screwdrivers, and those who want to become one, will find a very extensive range of bicycle tools in the MTB tool box from Weber Werke. A total of 106 tools are included, which promise a wide range of applications simply because of the quantity. Our test shows whether this is really the case.

General information about the manufacturer

Initially located in the automotive sector, Weber Werke now offers workshop equipment for a wide variety of segments. The wide range includes, among other things, lifting platforms, tire changers, workshop trolleys, tools and much more. According to the manufacturer, the products are not only used in workshops, but also by tire services, vehicle test centers, authorities and automobile and tire manufacturers. The articles are sold from the company headquarters in Herleshausen, in the middle of Germany.

Weber works MTB tool box 106 pieces: first impression

The MTB tool box from Weber works makes a very professional impression. The tool case made of sturdy sheet metal has three drawers at the front, which can be easily pulled out thanks to the ball-bearing guide. A stop prevents it from being pulled out too far. In the drawers there are cleanly cut foam inserts with the appropriate tools. The situation is similar with the hinged lid compartment. The carrying handles of the case are extremely robust and pack well - this applies to both the side handles and the top handle. And that is sorely needed: With a weight of around 17,3 kilograms, the 106-piece MTB tool box is one of the heavyweights in our bike tool test series.

Processing and feel

Thanks to the recessed grips, the tools can be easily and simply removed from the foam inserts. Clearly arranged, the tool is therefore quickly at hand. The quality of the tools varies somewhat. That is perhaps in the nature of things. The universal tools, which are also used in other areas at Weber, are absolutely convincing in terms of quality. These include the 1/2″ and 1/4″ socket sets with the associated reversible ratchets and extensions. In terms of quality, the bicycle tool is aimed more at hobby mechanics. The handles made of plastic, including those on the chain whip and the pedal wrench, are neither ergonomically shaped nor do they offer a non-slip grip for sweaty hands. The hard-to-reach chain tool and the small, soft tire levers could also come from the hardware store.

Which repairs are possible and can the tool convince in use?

Despite the immensely wide range of tools with 106 parts, the MTB tool box has some gaps - at least as far as bike repairs are concerned. Among other things, a cone wrench, a chainring counterholder, chain lock pliers and a Bowden cable cutter are missing. There are a lot of tools on board that don't explicitly fit into the bicycle tools category. These include the combination pliers, the side cutters or the universal knife. Certainly all kind of usable, but not exactly in relation to the bike. The torque wrench, on the other hand, is very useful and should not be missing, especially when assembling carbon parts. The chain cleaning brush makes a cheap impression, but does its job. The tool case from Weber is completed by a patch kit, a digital air pressure gauge, a mini pump and a multi-tool for on the go.

In Weber's MTB tool box, many things are well intentioned, but not always ideally implemented. The range of tools is immense, but has some gaps in the area of bicycle repairs. The quality of some tools, such as the wrench sets, is impressive, but the bicycle tools in particular usually do not appear to be of high quality.
