Bicycle tool test: Drive, gears and wheels are waiting, and much more, BBB Cycling promises all this with the AllroundKit BTL-91 tool case. According to the manufacturer, the robust tool box should contain all the tools needed to do the most common work on the bike. We took a closer look at the generously sized case and its contents.
General information about the manufacturer
BBB Cycling was founded in 1998 by Chris Koppert and Frank Moons after their retirement from professional cycling. Although the brand has grown enormously over the past 25 years, the products are still developed at the headquarters in the Netherlands. The design process, according to the company, takes months, sometimes years, and is intended to include many moments of testing, refactoring, feedback, and re-testing. The portfolio now includes around 1500 items that are sold in over 40 countries.
BBB Cycling AllroundKit BTL-91 tool case: First impression
The first impression when looking into the BBB Cycling AllroundKit BTL-91 tool case: very tidy and a lot of plastic waste. Except for the chain brush, all tools are neatly welded into individual small bags. This is no longer entirely understandable these days, especially since the tool is perfectly protected in the case anyway. Otherwise the product makes a decent impression. The case is stable, the tools are of very good quality and the clear arrangement enables quick access. Thanks to the recessed grips, the tools can be easily and easily removed from the cleanly cut foam insert. A larger recess also allows for an uncomplicated addition of individually required tools.
Processing and feel
The processing of the tools is absolutely top. When it comes to handling, most tools also know how to inspire. The chain whip can be gripped perfectly like the 1/2″ wrench. The cable cutter, the chain tool and the chain lock pliers all present themselves at the same high level. The rubberized handles ensure comfortable working. The extra-long and stable tire lever can be used on both sides. This means that both a gentler plastic side and a metal side for stubborn specimens are available for tire removal. The Torx key, on the other hand, isn't exactly the ideal solution. Due to its Y-shape, it can't be used everywhere in a confined space.
Which repairs are possible and can the tool convince in use?
BBB Cycling's AllroundKit doesn't really present itself as an all-rounder when it comes to the selection of tools. The content has some gaps that we would not expect to find in a bicycle tool case. Smaller Torx keys are missing, as are cone keys, bottom bracket keys and pedal keys. Even a small screwdriver to adjust the rear derailleur is not included. Unfortunately, many repairs cannot be carried out with this very limited equipment. Even nice tools like the chain brush, the chain gauge or the cable cutter cannot console you.
