Cycling: Rohan Dennis won the second stage of the Tour Down Under. The Australian won from a five-strong breakaway group and thus also takes the lead in the overall standings.

Dennis attacks in the last kilometer

The second stage of the Tour Down Under was to shake up the general classification. The decisive attack came 20 kilometers before the finish line when the later stage winner Rohan Dennis (Jumbo – Visma) his Australian compatriots Jay Hindley (Bora – hansgrohe) and Jay Vine (UAE), as well as the Swiss Mauro Schmid (Soudal – Quick-Step) and the Brit Simon yates (Jayco – AlUla) were able to deduct. In order not to have to risk a sprint, the strong time trialist then launched another attack on the last kilometer. Dennis saved two seconds in front of Vine, Schmid and Yates, five in front of Hindley and eleven in front of the peloton.

Matthews and Bettiol lose valuable time

Rohan Dennis takes over the overall lead with the stage win. The previous leader Alberto Bettiol (EF Education – EasyPost) was unable to follow the peloton due to cramps. Michael Matthews (Jayco – AlUla) struggled with technical problems at the decisive moment. The German presented himself strongly again Marius Mayrhofer (DSM). The 22-year-old finished eleventh and is still eighth in the overall standings.
