Cycling: Marius Mayrhofer sensationally won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. The 22-year-old German was able to assert himself in the sprint of a depleted peloton. This is his first professional win.
Mayrhofer cheers and cries
After 4 hours and 15 minutes the winner of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race was determined. And there was a big surprise after 174,3 kilometers with start and finish in Geelong. Marius Mayrhofer (DSM) won the one-day race in Australia as an absolute outsider and – at least abroad – as a still unknown nobody. The 22-year-old sprinted a decimated peloton ahead of the Frenchman Hugo Page (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) and the Australians simon clarke (Israel – Premier Tech) and Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla) through. top favourite Caleb ewan (UniSA-Australia) has to settle for sixth place.
First win as a pro
That's okay Marius Mayrhofer happy about a victory in the pros for the first time. Most recently, he made headlines in 2018 at the World Championships in Innsbruck, when he was behind at the Junior World Championships Remco Evenepoel Vice World Champion. He has been driving for the WorldTour team DSM since 2022. Before that, he worked for their development team.
